Is there a stubborn dialog box on your screen that you'd like to make disappear? Dialog boxes are the little pop-up boxes that show up, usually with buttons that say OK and Close. While dialog boxes usually serve a purpose, sometimes they won't close, or you don't want to accept what the box is saying. In this article, we go over easy ways to close a dialog box on your Windows or Mac computer, even if it seems like the box won't close.

Ways to Close Dialog Boxes

The easiest way is to click one of the buttons on the dialog box itself. If the box has an x, try to click that. You can also press Esc on your keyboard to close out a dialog box. If nothing else works, try force-quitting the application that's giving the box or restarting your computer entirely.

1. 1 Accept or cancel the dialog box. Most dialog boxes will have some way to accept or reject whatever the box is saying. Acceptance buttons might say OK, Accept, Apply, Later, Yes, or Finish. Rejection buttons usually say Cancel. Responding to the dialog box will usually close it.
   • Sometimes a dialog box only has one button. This means that whatever the dialog box says does not hinge on you accepting or rejecting it—it is simply informing you of something. These dialog boxes usually have buttons that say OK or Close.
2. 2 Click the X or alternate buttons. If the dialog box has an x button in the upper-right corner, you can click the x to close the dialog box. However, this could sometimes make more dialog boxes open up instead. Also, not all dialog boxes will have an option to close them in this way. Advertisement
3. 3 Press Esc to close the dialog box. If pressing one of the dialog box's buttons doesn't get rid of it, you can usually clear out a dialog box by pressing the Esc or Escape key on your computer's keyboard.
4. 4 Close the program that's giving you the dialog box. If the dialog box on your screen is open in an application, you can try closing that application to make the dialog box go away. Simply right-click on the program in the taskbar and click Close window. However, this may make additional dialog boxes pop up.
   • For example, if you want to close a dialog box in Word for Windows, right-click the Word icon on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, then select Close window.
5. 5 Force-quit the application. If you aren't able to easily close the program giving you a dialog box, you can try to force quit it using Task Manager or Force Quit. How you do this differs depending on whether you have a Windows or Mac computer:
   • Windows: Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and click Task Manager. Locate the program in Task Manager that's giving you the dialog box, right-click on it, and click End Task.[1]
   • Mac: Press ⌥ Option+⌘ Cmd+Esc to open Force Quit. Click the program that is giving you the dialog box and click Force Quit.[2]
6. 6 Restart your computer to clear out the dialog box. If you have a particularly pesky dialog box that just won't go away, restart your computer to get rid of it. Make sure to save your work before you turn your computer off so you don't lose anything important.
   • Try to restart your computer from the power menu, if possible. If you're locked into the dialog box, you can instead press and hold your computer's power button until it powers down, then restart it after a few seconds.

1. Dialog boxes are often displayed to give the user a choice between options or to provide important information about a task. The program creator may want the user to be sure they understand the effects of the requested action, avoid liability, and give the user a chance to back out of an action before it begins. Dialog boxes are typically helpful and not bothersome, though they can sometimes be difficult to close if there's a problem with the program. Some common dialog boxes you'll see in various Windows and Mac apps:
   • Prompting you to save your work before exiting a program.
   • Asking you to confirm that you really want to perform a certain action.
   • Allowing you to choose between two or more options.
   • Providing information about an action or task the program is completing.
   • Telling you how to undo a change you've performed.
   • Telling you there is an error in the program preventing you from completing an action.
   • Informing you that updates are available.
   • Alerting you of notifications, such as new email messages or social media posts.
