The ever-controversial high-speed rail HS2 is often in the news.

Not only did environmental campaigners recently block a HS2 tunnel – protestors often call for the entire line to be scrapped.

Most recently, the British government announced that a planned part of the super-quick railway line had been abandoned altogether.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that the eastern leg of HS2 (serving Birmingham, Derby, Sheffield and Leeds) will no longer go ahead – a decision many northern MPs have slammed.

HS2 is still set to connect the southerly capital London to Birmingham and northern city Manchester, but not for a long while yet.

So, when will HS2 actually be up and running?

Boris Johnson has said he will look at other ways to connect Leeds to HS2

Right now, it’s expected that the very earliest HS2’s high-speed trains could be running in 2029.

So, we’ve got at least seven years to go before commuters start to feel any benefit from HS2.

In reality, the building work could take much longer – as not only is the line being built, but so are new stations.

Phase 1 of the project (London to Birmingham) should be completed between 2029 and 2033.

As for Phrase 2 (extending the line from Birmingham to Manchester, Wigan and Crewe), building work is estimated to be completed between 2035 until 2040.

In Manchester, HS2 trains will run to the existing Piccadilly station as well as a new station called Interchange at Manchester Airport.

Plans are also in the works for more high-speed rail lines, from the east to west coast.
