golfcabriolet90 G I'm just wondering about something. I had my ignition timing set at an authorozied VW dealer sometime ago as I didn't have the equipment to do it and had less technical experience with the car than I do now. I remember seeing at the time on the internet, that it had to be set at 2000-2500 rpm, with the coolant temp sensor off and then to 6+-1 btdc. They (VW) set it to 6 deg btdc, but the mechanic said it should be set at idle and not at 2000-2500rpm. I know they use a special reading device that fits in that little plug that us diy's remove when setting the timing, but does this vw-device then have some kind of correction-shift that allows them to set it at idle and stille set it right? Is the whole 2000-2500rpm just for DIY's using the basic timing light? Hope someone can clarify this, I'm not really interested in buying a timing light if I don't have to you see. (golfcabriolet90) Image <edit> Andreas, You need to either buy a timing light or find a tech capable of reading and following Factory procedures. The Digital readout device has no compensation modes in it, it simply reads the same timing you can read with a strobe light. It does read it with a high level of precision. (Hmmm, that means the dunderhead at the dealer set your timing wrong, but did do it precisely!! Image Image ). If you are buying a timing light so you can do your own work on older cars, get one that can read advance. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif Ron </edit> Modified by tolusina at 9:39 PM 6-25-2005 #3 · Jun 26, 2005 Re: Ignition timing on Digifant II. (tolusina) Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. I still have my receipt, think I'll go down and bust some heads. But using a timing light, is it straight forward? Is that the kind where you need to cut through the insulation on the spark-plug wires? #4 · Jun 26, 2005 Re: Ignition timing on Digifant II. (golfcabriolet90) I've never done it myself, but from what I've read, it isn't too difficult. 1) Disconnect CTS 2) Start engine and rev past 4k 4 times (Clears the memory) 4) rev to 2500 5) use timing light to see where the timing is 6) Turn dizzy to adjust.. 7) Rev past 4k 4 times 8) Shut off ign 9) connect CTS If anyone knows something I've missed please feel free to chime in, but this is what I recall reading it should be... I wouldn't do that, just chalk it up to experience. You might need the resources of that dealer sometime in the future.

It's pretty straight forward. A helper is helpful (duh Image ) to keep the RPM in the correct range. Remove the flywheel cover plug completely, shine the light in there and rotate the distributor 'till the marks line up. Get an inductive pickup light, preferably with an advance readout. The inductive pick up simply clips around the outside of the #1 plug wire, totally non-invasive. No shock hazard unless your wires are really bad or you disconnect a secondary wire while running. Once you have it set, follow the rev it up a couple of times procedure of your choice to clear the DigiFant memory. #7 · Jun 26, 2005 Re: Ignition timing on Digifant II. (tolusina) here's a trick that i use to keep the RMP's within range. Get a wooden clothes pin. take the spring part out. slide the wedged part of the clothes pin in the throttle linkage till its within range and it will stay there till it is timed correctly. #8 · Jun 26, 2005 Re: Ignition timing on Digifant II. (knappy) When there is no timing light.... Make sure all the marks are alligned (little o on the flywheel, No1 piston is at TDC and the distributor rotor point to the notch under it) With the CTS connected and the engine at full temp. undo the bolt holding the distributor. Hold the revs arround 2500 and start turning it Clock Wise (direction of the clock). You will notice that egnine is losing its revs. Then turn it the other way (oposite of the clock) to advance it. Turning slowly, you will notice the engine reving higher and more clear. While you turn it, there is a point where it doesn't change anymore. This is the point where the knock sensor starts to detect knocking and retards it back. Find that sweet point where it doesn't change anymore and you're set. If you could measure it with a timing light, I bet you would find 6-7 degrees. Image Insert Quotes Post Reply
