manwhore M On my VW manual it states static timing is 7.5BTDC and ignition at TDC at 900rpm ( vac hose off and plugged) Now I set the static a few week back at 7.5BTDC but after a run today I decided to check with a strobe . I had to adjust it to TDC From memory ( as I wasn't taking much notice ) i'm sure before I moved anything it was at 7.5BTC ( what I set it at static) I moved the dizzy to the stated TDC for the strobe timing but this would now of moved it if I check the static won't it ? So I guess it's one or the other is it ? #1 · Mar 3, 2015 On my VW manual it states static timing is 7.5BTDC and ignition at TDC at 900rpm ( vac hose off and plugged) Now I set the static a few week back at 7.5BTDC but after a run today I decided to check with a strobe . Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Mar 3, 2015 Standard Beetle timing is 7.5 btdc at idle or static, static is set not running using a bulb. #3 · Mar 4, 2015 Hi Dubsy , I'm familiar with how to do both static and strobe settings but don't understand the 2 figures I have . In my workshop manual it states STATIC 7.5 BTDC IGNITION TDC @900rpm ( vac hose off ) this is a 1971 , 1.2 bug with stock carb and dizzy ( vac only) I set the static to stated figure and it drove ok , while the sun was out yesterday decided to check with a strobe and as expected it was 7.5BTDC , I set it to TDC but this will now of changed the static settings if I check that again . So unless the vacume device somehow retards the strobotic timing of 7.5 back to TDC at idle then it can only be one or the other setting or am I missing something ? There doesn't seem to be much difference driving between the two except on one or two occasions I had a sort of flat spot on acceleration ( just a blip) when using the strobe timing figure of TDC .. #4 · Mar 4, 2015 I looked in my data book an it shows eng code D 1970 and on is tdc vac off at idle with 32-35 btdc vac advance. Dizzy number 0231 137 039. Pre 70 is 7.5 btdc vac off and 23-28 of vac advance. Dizzy number 0231 137 009/029. 35 ish btdc is the max advance for both they just use different vacuum units. #5 · Mar 4, 2015 Cheers Dubsy , yes my engine number starts D08 , I have it down as july/aug 71 ,34bhp . When I looked at max advance I think it was around 30 BTDC my workshop manual states engine numbers D065001 on at TDC at idle so it looks like that's right .. Why the 7.5BTDC static then ?? is this figure just ballpark if rebuilding or putting dizzy back in etc ... I was also told it's far more accurate to time a bug statically ,is this right ? if so I should do it at TDC ? #6 · Mar 4, 2015 If static and idle timing are differ, check mechanical advancer inside distributor, springs or parts maybe worn. #7 · Mar 4, 2015 Yours should be 0` static or at idle. Static set up is less accurate than a timing light when running. Maximum advance is the important part, exceed 35` total advance and you may damage the engine. #8 · Mar 4, 2015 Why does the manual state 7.5 BTDC ? Why the 2 figures , I can't see how checking both static and strobe can offer the same values I can set static which means the strobe setting is out , if I set the strobe then the static will be out , it can't be both .. UNLESS the static setting of 7.5 BTDC gets retarded to TDC with the vac hose off when checking with strobe as there would be zero vacume and the moving plate inside the dizzy if fully retarded , when the vac hose back on there's enough vac to advance it to the 7.5 figure which is the only way I can see it tallying up using both figures . so basically taking the vac hose on or off moves the timing by 7.5 degress advanced or retarded .. I can't see how both figures could end up being the same setting as far as when the spark occurs any other way .. #9 · Mar 4, 2015 Haynes manual? Only a double vacuum unit retards timing. Static and strobe should be exactly the same, either way it's vacuum off so there's no advance. Have you a photo of your dizzy? The 0`setup starts vacuum earlier so it will advance when running, that's why it's set with vac disconnected. #10 · Mar 5, 2015 Going to get the number off the dizzy later .. went to see the mechanic that does my cars , he said the two figures didn't seem right , using a strobe and static apparently should have the same values , they are just two different ways of doing the same thing .. he has a data base and looked the bug up it states TDC for both static and strobe so will set at that .. It runs ok now at TDC but just has a little flat spot now and then ( not all the time) so I will do the dwell first then set the timing .. This post has been deleted #11 · Mar 8, 2015

Depends on engine size. You might have a chain, if it does use a belt it needs changing. 0 Reply Insert Quotes Post Reply
