Italy: GTS Rail Orders 20 Additional Traxx DC3 Electric Locomotives

Alstom has signed an agreement to deliver a further 20 Traxx DC3 electric locomotives to Italy-based GTS Rail.

Known as the E.494 in Italy, the DC3 is Alstom’s latest generation of high-power electric locomotive and has been designed to maximise efficiency, minimise maintenance, and provides higher load and traction capability with lower energy consumption.

This order includes the option to add Alstom’s ‘last mile’ function to the locomotives, which enables them to operate on non-electrified lines often found in ports, industrial areas or terminals.

It also follows on from another order by GTS Rail earlier this year for five Traxx DC3 locomotives fitted with this functionality.

Once fulfilled, this latest order will bring the number of Traxx DC3 locomotives in GTS Rail’s fleet to 33 (eight of which with the last mile function).

This figure goes up to 45 Alstom locomotives when you include the Traxx DC2 – E.483 models currently in GTS Rail’s fleet.

This important contract, confirming a highly successful and valuable collaboration, follows the agreement signed in January 2022 for the supply of five E.494 locomotives equipped with Last Mile function.

The locomotives will be produced at Alstom’s Vado Ligure site in Italy.

Delivery will start in early 2024.
