Focal Solo's Ok they are both great monitors, but what is the difference in their character? I would think the 0110's would have less bass but would be killer on the mid's and high's? Please no Focal Twin comments, just the solo's.) Share Reply Quote Old 26th May 2008 | Show parent #3 Glenn Bucci Lives for gear Glenn Bucci's Avatar Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 3,852 My Studio 50 Reviews written 🎧 15 years I was able to check out several monitors at Melody Music in PA. Great store by the way. I listened to my Tannoy Precision 8D's, JBL's LSR 6328's, Focal Solo's and Twins which were all in their store. Ok, I will get to the point, the Solo's are great sounding monitors. The high end is not harsh or too bright. The mid's give a lot of info, and there is a lot of bass for monitors this size. They are a little smaller than I thought they were going to be. In comparrison, my Tannoy's were brighter, but harsh in the higher end. Thankfully they have a good EQ in the back. By reducing the mid high's by -2db and the high end by -1db, I was able to get them to sound a lot better. The Tannoy's have a larger sweet spot, and have a bigger, fuller sound due to the size of the box and woofer. However the Solo's are more refined, focused, and easier on your ears. I liked the Solo's better than the JBL's they had there too. I know you did not want to hear about the Twins Tube World, but since I was A/B speakers I thought I would give some comment. I found the Solo's have a very similar sound to the Twins. The Twins though were fuller, bigger and had more bass. However the character of the Solo's are very similar. No one should be ashamed of buying the Solo's. They are not inferior, just not as big and full sounding due to them being in a smaller box. You can get a great mix on the Solo's. The amount of bass was in fact similar to the larger Tannoy's. Personally since I have fuller sounding monitors, I would want to go for the Twins but at this point, I cannot afford to spend money updating my monitors, especially since I am content with my Tannoy's at this point. The Solo's can go loud but they sound best when you are closer to them due to their size. I have not heard monitors that would help you mix music better than Solos in the price range and size. I am sure there are some that might be as good (but with a different character). Yes the Focals are as good as they say they are on gearslutz. (2 woofers). all so,maybe you had the chance to compare the solo 6 to the dynaudio BM6a,they are the same size, and i wonder how is the low end of the solo 6 compare to the BM6a - im shore the mid and the high on the solo 6 better, but how is the low ? again, tnx for your help. Dynaudio sounds very different, my personal choice would be the Solo's over them. I spent several years looking for a good small active monitor - in the end only the K+H O110 came up to my mark - though I bought the O110D version. Very trustworthy. I agree with you that good monitors should not have a character. However every speaker company that claims their montiors are flat and netural sound different from all the other company's monitors. So they all have a certain character to them. Some are more forward, some are harsh, some have a gentle soft ribbon character, etc. Thanks for your insight Fletcher and Glenn. The Solo's due seem to fit the bill. My only question on the K&H 0110's is, do they have enough bass response that one would not need a sub with it? (Taking into account your not recording dance music or rap and your not going to blast your monitors for clients). To my knowledge, they are similar monitors but I've not heard the 0110. Once installed on very well built speaker stands, the 0100's bass response became pretty shocking for a box its size. My point is to not only incorporate room treatment into your plan for accurate LF monitoring, but to also consider stands as part of the system. Our stands are very heavy plate and tubular steel, filled with steel shot, coupled to the concrete slab floor by pointed feet, and the monitor case itself sits on small steel points for acoustic coupling to the stand. Probably overkill, but I'll say that subjectively the result was worth the effort. The bass response is more than acceptable for the size of speaker, there is plenty of information there. If you have hearing problems/attenutation in your mids or highs of your ears then you might have a problem with the K&H because they ARE flat compared to most other speakers. So it just depends on how you like to work and what you like to hear. The Focals definitely sound different than the KH so it should be a clear choice. Share Reply Quote Top Mentioned Manufacturers
