Tarnów Polish - Poland Merhaba. I'm not sure about the use of a grammatical construction in this sentence I found: M.S.VIII. yüzyıla gelinceye kadar Türklerin henüz yazıyı kullanmadıkları dönemdeki edebiyattır. Previously I have learned that "-inceye kadar" is translated as "until", but usually the performer of the later action is marked at the first place, eg. Otobüs duruncaya kadar, inemedim - I couldn't get off until the bus stopped. Ben burdan çıkana kadar kaldırın - Remove it until (before) I leave! but in the main sentence, the first noun "yüzyıl" takes dative suffix, like it was something coming to it. So it would be more logical for me to say: M.S.VIII. yüzyıl gelinceye kadar... - before the 8th century came... Or my another idea, if the sentence remained as the original: It is the literature in the period when Turks didn't use the writing yet, until they came to the 8th century. So, finally, what is the best translation? Mmurattug

Tarnów Polish - Poland hmm.. but on the other hand, if you enter into Google the literal phrase "yüzyıla gelinceye kadar"- in quotation marks, it gives plenty of results with such construction used.Black4blue

Turkish We're talking about the literature in the period during which Turks didn't have any orthography until 8th century, A.D. Yes, it should be obvious that it's Turks who arrived at 8th century, but that still doesn't change the fact that "gelinceye" should be dropped and the sentence should be rearranged in favor of...just about everything that is held dear. As it is, the sentence implies that there is a period in which Turks didn't write until they arrived at 8th century, and then they may or may not started using it, while whether the period ended right there is anyone's guess. Türklerin henüz yazıyı kullanmadıkları, M.S.VIII. yüzyıla kadar süren dönemdeki edebiyattır. Okay, now it should make a little more sense. You must log in or register to reply here.
