My Golf R ('16 plate) is due a major service, and only a measly 25k miles on the clock !! I think VW are quoting around £350. So questions: - Are there any indys out there that do it cheaper but to the same standards?
- Is it worth getting VW to do the service based on a car that is now 4.5 years old?
- What do VW do/check in their major service that perhaps indys dont?
- I've always been hesitant to take it to some high street service stations however I've heard only good things about Halfords service station near where I live. (Please don't flame me) but would it be worth taking here? I know they use OEM parts and there is an upgrade to the premium oil at £30 although not sure. Any horror stories?
- Any indys recommended for the south West Hertfordshire region? eg. around St. Albans/Watford/Borehamwood/Radlett/Edgware. Thanks guys!

VW services are very misleading imo. Major service is every two years after year 3 I think (so years 4,6,8 etc). It’s not like the old days where plugs / filters were changed at every major service.

Brake fluid is due at year 3 then every 2 years thereafter. DSG is due at 40k miles (Mk7) / 80k (Mk7.5). What year and mileage is your car? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

VW services are very misleading imo. Major service is every two years after year 3 I think (so years 4,6,8 etc). It’s not like the old days where plugs / filters were changed at every major service.
I wouldn’t take my car to Halfords for a service. A local vag specialist will do a better job than your local dealer.

That being said if it’s had full Vw service up to now saving £100 might not be that much of a saving when you come to sell. I just had a minor service and I wasn’t impressed. They just don’t seem to know what they need to do until it gets in the workshop and my bill doubled as gearbox oil and brake fluid needed doing which they never realised until I dropped it off!I’m not flaming you on halfrauds, I’ll leave that to others

As slider says, the VW service is a Major at year 3 and then alternate Minor and Major services after that. So with your car being 4.5 years old then a Major would be due at the 5 year point.
I've always had my cars serviced at a main dealer (with a service plan for 2 or 3 years) then if keeping the car, continuing with same dealership as their service team are good. My previous mk7 was serviced in that way throughout the 5.5 years I had it. However, many prefer a good independant so I guess it's your call.

And Haldex every 3 years - preferably getting the filter cleaned in addition to the standard oil change.

I echo what@slider09 says. I’ve used a specialist for years and he’s been great. Some specialists aren’t necessarily cheaper but in my experience, they’re worth their weight in gold. Dealerships are there to make money so it’s just a production line imo - get a car in, drop the oil, change some filters etc, get it out, get the next one in. A good indy will know the foibles with these cars and do a good job. As an example, VW will charge a small fortune to change the clutch on mine and charge a ton of labour to fit a standard clutch. A specialist I used fitted an uprated clutch to mine in around four and a half hours and charge less. Google VW specialists in you area and look at the reviews for them. For exam, Frank L. Follet in St Albans seem to get good reviews. Ring them up for a quote and see what you think.Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

In fairness to dealerships, some on the forum have had good service from them but it varies. I’ve had bad experiences with main dealers so I use a specialist that I’ve used for years.Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I've always liked my local VW dealership, however it's come to the point where I feel that a service is a service, as long as it's in the book, especially for my car which is nearly 5 years old...but, at the same time, i would like getting it serviced somewhere reliable who also uses decent parts (if need be) and won't cut corners. My oil/filter service light came on recently, which would be at the 4 year mark, however when i was in my dealer last year, they said the next service was the major one...and my last service was a minor one.

I agree. It is just worth bearing in mind if you're going to sell the car privately as it can have a bearing.

Thanks. I rang them and asked how much a service was and their answer "well depends really.... cant really say over the phone....£350-£400"... wasn't that impressed with the answer to be honest - he didn't sound too sure of himself, either that, or probably thought I was a timewaster....

So your gearbox oil was not due - at 25k miles.
Not a bad thing to over service, but being told your DSG needs servicing when it doesn’t is either a lack of knowledge on your dealers front, or damn right naughty to extract more cash from you.

I rang my dealer back in January for a price on a coolant flush. Service guy didn’t know so went off to speak to their head mechanic (or whatever posh name they call themselves). Came back with - oh, it’s a big job, full day to do properly. £1400 + vat (ish can’t remember the exact figure). I told them he had mis-understood my question and I only wanted a coolant flush. He acknowledged my question and that was the price. Spoke to my local Indy where I normally take it, just over £100 and done in a little over an hour. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
