indigogolfturbo just upgraded my alternator from the faulty old 90amp to new 120amp there are two small spade connections on the side. one is for the battery/alternator dashboard light, the other the battery sense wire. i cannot tell which is supposed to be which? the haynes wiring diagram says black wire is for battery sense. the brown/black wire is for dashboard altr/battery light. the loom on the car for connecting the alternator has two black wires on a moulded d-shaped plug marked 1 & 2. the new alternator has a rectangular shaped plug. i have obtained a new rectangular plug from stealers but have to wire it up myself. the 120amp lucas alternator has vw/audi stamped on it. there is an upper & lower spade contact in the terminal/socket on the side. i need to know which goes to the batt dash light & which one is the batt sense wire. many thanks #1 · May 22, 2008 just upgraded my alternator from the faulty old 90amp to new 120amp there are two small spade connections on the side. one is for the battery/alternator dashboard light, the other the battery sense wire. i cannot tell which is supposed to be which? the haynes wiring diagram says black wire is for battery sense. the brown/black wire is for dashboard altr/battery light. the loom on the car for connecting the alternator has two black wires on a moulded d-shaped plug marked 1 & 2. the new alternator has a rectangular shaped plug. i have obtained a new rectangular plug from stealers but have to wire it up myself. the 120amp lucas alternator has vw/audi stamped on it. there is an upper & lower spade contact in the terminal/socket on the side. i need to know which goes to the batt dash light & which one is the batt sense wire. many thanks Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · May 24, 2008 "L" terminal goes to dash alternator warning light , "dfm" goes to motoronic control unit(engine management) "L" is the upper contact nearest the rounded end of socket , "dfm" the lower when the alternator is fitted to the car. on 120amp alternator with rectangular socket on the side "d+" = the alternator warning light , "w" = motoronic control unit(engine managment).
