Vipa V V My car broke down on me while driving yesterday, randomly dash light up and lost all power. I had to call for breakdown assistance after testing with voltmeter was only around 11.8v with engine running, so isolated problem to either the alternator or wiring. It worked OK with a booster pack connected. My fuse box had melted a bit too, I noticed a small hole in the cover couple months ago which I didn't think much of, but it has gotten a lot bigger and melted the left plastic fusebox clip. looks pretty dangerous really, I'm lucky it hadn't caught fire. I think the first or second wire on the left was really badly corroded, have ordered new fusebox and been told the alternator wire needs replacing too and until that arrives there is apparently no way of checking if the alternator is gone? Hoping it could just be the fusebox + wiring. Could this be related to my sound system at all? I've got 3 amps running around 1200w RMS with only 8 gauge cable from the battery that I've been meaning to upgrade to some 4 gauge wire I have lying around...or is this totally unrelated to the fusebox melting. I'm thinking the inline power cable fuse would have blown if that was the problem ant it's been fine for over a year? Anyhow just wondering if there was any point to upgrading this alternator wire if it is part of big 3 would now be a good time to start upgrading. The garage have said it will take a couple of days for them to get the OEM wire from VW germany so thinking if I can get another wire sooner would be good if there would be any benefit. I need to let garage know tmrw about ordering the overpriced VW wire, which will mean I'm off road for few more days. Is there an alternate complete wiring kit available for this purpose with correct connectors or best sticking OEM? Any advice appreciated! Thanks #3 · Mar 19, 2014 Get a new fusebox,(they melt all stock parts in the car) but do TB3 instead of replacing the alternator wire with an OEM part and use something like 4 gauge to the alternator fuse on the new fusebox.Extra ground cable from the case of the alternator to the car's chassis.4 gauge minimum to the back of the car with a single ANL fuseholder near to the battery, don't use the crappy glass AGU fuses which are a waste of money. #4 · Mar 19, 2014 Ahh wish I had heard this earlier! I think the garage I had the car recovered to may have fitted, or at least ordered a new OEM wire already :( Getting them to do the timing belt + waterpump while it's there also. I should find out tomorrow if the alternator is faulty, not sure how likely this will be.. I'm hoping it's OK but if it does needs to be replaced I'll take your advice on TB3 and maybe try and source a 120amp or 150amp alternator to go with. Happen to have around 4.5metres of 4 gauge Kicker power cable lying around from my old install, which I was going to use that to replace the 8 gauge amp power cable I'm currently running from the battery, but should be suitable for this purpose too if needed I hope B) Insert Quotes Post Reply
