I’m in the market for something new (to me) it needs to be practical but also capable of being fun. The obvious answer to this is and always has been the golf GTi. I’m looking at the MKVI and MKVII versions. A MKVII would be stretching the budget somewhat so I’m tempted to go for the earlier car. I have read the horror stories about timing chains. How serious an issue is it? Should I avoid completely and spend more on the newer car? or just buy with caution? If I buy with caution what do I need to look for?
For what it's worth, my mk VII has never missed a beat in over 5 years. Relatively cheap to run as well (only big thing so far is the spectre of first set of new brake pads and replacing the oil in the front LSD: about £300 for both). I'd thoroughly recommend it. I've only driven the regular mk VI, so couldn't compare directly, but it seems well put together. There's also the mk V, which I think is the best-looking of the 3, although slightly down on power...
If you can stretch the budget a little, I'd go for the MK7. It's a much better and more accomplished car all-round. The MK6's are good too but they're still on the MK5 platform, which is a bit dated. This isn't specifically a bad thing, as it's a good chassis, but the new MQB platform just takes it to the next level. It's worth the extra dosh IMO.
I found Mk6 build quality to be an issue, wasn't as well screwed together as the Mk5 & had a number of issues within warranty, granted none were serious but it was a bit of a ramp queen. No such issues with the Mk7 & it's all round a better car.

My mk6 GTI is more solid feeling in key places (door handles/rests, steering wheel, console plastics) than my new mk7.5 GTD daily. That said, the tech is significantly improved and the chassis much better... even in derv disguise. Power wise though the GTI feels much faster than the figures suggest. You should be ok if you get a later build of the mk6... 2011 or later to be safe of timing chain issues. My ‘11 plate DSG is on 103k now and has been fine, although recently have experienced a little hesitancy when cold - pretty sure this is intake manifold related though. The mk7 wins on general reliability. With your budget you might be able to find a mk6 Edition 35. Uses the older block, so no issues there, and much rarer. That would be my pick.
