There are so many Japanese that have different meanings depending on the situation.
“Daijobu” is one of the good examples because there are many ways that you can use it.
Daijobu originally means “I am alright” or “I am okay”, but it is used in various contexts today.
1, A: Are you okay?
B: Yes. I am alright. (Daijobu)
In this context, the meaning is similar to the original one. When somebody is worried about you and says “Are you alright?”, you can say “Daijobu” as “I am aright”. Japanese people tend to say Daijobu not to make them worry more even if they are not okay.
2, A: Would you like coffee?
B: No, thank you. (Daijobu)
When you want to graciously refuse something, you can say “Daijobu”.
It implies “Thank you for asking, but I am alright” behind the word, and can be used in a business scene as well.
3, A: I am worried about the exam.
B: Don’t worry! it will work out! (Daijobu)
Daijobu can be used for encouraging people as well, such as in this context.
