white81cabby W so i picked up this '77 rabbit for $200 and was going to use it as a parts car but now thinking of getting it running and rolling around on it for a while. previous owner said he daily drove it for a while but then it lost spark and he never bothered to fix the car. the car has a Compu-Fire DIS-IX distributorless ignition system on it, and one side of the coil burnt out. a new coil is $170 for that system and i dont want to buy one because i dont have the money, and, i have a stock distributor and ignition coil laying around. the car also has a 1.8 motor from a mk2 golf running on a 32/36 weber carb. anyways, the guy stripped out all the engine wiring from the car including the fuse box, and wired everything up by himself and put everything on switches/push-button start. i want to wire up a stock distributor and ignition coil into the car. the distributor i have came from a 1.8 mk2 jetta motor and has 3 prong connector on it. i was wondering if anyone knows how to wire up the distributor to the coil, etc? i know the green wire (middle prong) from the distributor goes to the coil, but where do the other 2 wires (red wire and black wire) go from the distributor? on the distributor connector it has a "+" by the red wire and a "-" by the black wire and "0" by the green wire. i tried running the red (+) wire to the positive on the battery and the black wire (-) to the negative side of the battery and the green wire to the coil but i still dont get any spark. I also tried disconnecting the red and black wires and only running the green wire to the coil, but still didnt get any spark. i know the coil is good, and the distributor should be good because it came off a running motor. does anyone know how i can wire this up and get the car running? i looked at a bently and haynes manual but they only show the green wire going to the coil and dont say anything about the red and black wires. any help would be greatly appreciated. sorry for the long post lol here's a pic of the rabbit Image #1 · Dec 10, 2013 so i picked up this '77 rabbit for $200 and was going to use it as a parts car but now thinking of getting it running and rolling around on it for a while. previous owner said he daily drove it for a while but then it lost spark and he never bothered to fix the car. the car has a Compu-Fire DIS-IX distributorless ignition system on it, and one side of the coil burnt out. a new coil is $170 for that system and i dont want to buy one because i dont have the money, and, i have a stock distributor and ignition coil laying around. the car also has a 1.8 motor from a mk2 golf running on a 32/36 weber carb. anyways, the guy stripped out all the engine wiring from the car including the fuse box, and wired everything up by himself and put everything on switches/push-button start. i want to wire up a stock distributor and ignition coil into the car. the distributor i have came from a 1.8 mk2 jetta motor and has 3 prong connector on it. i was wondering if anyone knows how to wire up the distributor to the coil, etc? i know the green wire (middle prong) from the distributor goes to the coil, but where do the other 2 wires (red wire and black wire) go from the distributor? on the distributor connector it has a "+" by the red wire and a "-" by the black wire and "0" by the green wire. i tried running the red (+) wire to the positive on the battery and the black wire (-) to the negative side of the battery and the green wire to the coil but i still dont get any spark. You need an ignition control module (ICM) which takes the signal from the hall sensor in the distributor and converts it to pulses that drive the coil. You cannot drive a coil directly with a factory hall sensor distributor. You have 3 choices: 1) Get a points (mechanical) distributor and wire up a POINTS coil (yes they are different) and condenser to run the engine without any electronics and no ICM. That is what the 77 would have originally had. This is probably the most complicated option since the wiring for points relies on a bunch of stuff that is long gone from your car. 2) Use the A2 distributor you have and get a correct ICM and wiring harness off an A2 car and wire it up to an electronic ignition coil. This setup is essentially the same as all cars built in 81 up. The difference is that A1 and A2 cars have slightly different plugs but thats about the only difference. 3) You can get a standalone ignition module made by Pertronix and replace the hall sensor in the distributor you have with a self contained unit. These are essentially a hall sensor and ICM combined into one unit and they wire up directly to + and - and the coil and drive the coil directly. Option 2 is probably the cheapest and easiest. If you do a search in this forum there are posts floating around with all the schematics and stuff you need but like I said getting the harness, ICM and coil out of an A2 is probably the easiest way to get the wiring done and then splice it to power. #4 · Dec 12, 2013 thanks for the reply. so i guess if i can get a wiring harness off a 81 and newer cabby or rabbit than it should work as well. i just think that maybe it'll be easier splicing a mk1 harness into the car, and the guy did give me two mk1 fuse boxes with the car.
