TeflonDeF T I own a 2006 VW GTI 2.0T. The only modification I have so far is an AFE intake and cold airbox. I usually add an intake to my naturally aspirated vehicles because I love the throaty sound I get without having to modify the exhaust system. I have read MANY threads from anywhere on the internet about the noise pipe, but I'm not truly satified with the answers I've found. With this turbocharged engine, the intake didnt open up much of the throaty engine noise, but did open up the sound of my turbo. If I remove my noise pipe, will I lose any of my throaty sound, or gain any turbo sound, or does it simply get rid of the sound from inside the vehicle? I want to add as much sound, whether its engine noise or turbo noise without getting to the exhaust yet. I dont care about noise inside the vehicle. Also, do I need to buy extra parts or would it be just as beneficial to simply plug the holes and remove the pipe? i dont want to spend a lot of cash on a mod like this if its not needed. Also, I would like to gain some more power at low to mid range, since the intake took some away and added it up top. What are the best beginner mods at decent prices to achieve this? I am thinking about sending my ECU out to InMotionTuning to have it tuned. I am told this will make the engine run better and I will gain a lot of HP and torque across the band while also adding some boost. Any knowledge would be really appreciated. #1 · Feb 8, 2010 I own a 2006 VW GTI 2.0T. The only modification I have so far is an AFE intake and cold airbox. Since you have a intake you can get the turbo noise from that and don't need the noise pipe. By removing the noise pipe you will not gain any sound or lose and "throaty" sound. It would simply reduce the turbo sound inside the car (which I'm sure your getting plenty of with the intake). some companies make a plug for the pipe, you only need to plug the side of the pipe that is on the engine side. If you are handy you can make your own plug using a piece of 1.5" aluminum round bar and a radiator hose the correct size. something like my setup minus the fuel injector all you need is the bottom piece of aluminum: Image Image and it goes here: Image basically the pipe is just a void that has to be filled when the turbo spools. removing this void will give you a little better throttle response. The best thing to do to gain more power for cheap is to get "chipped" by one of the larger tuners. IE Unitronic, APR, REVO, GIAC. these run ~$600. with your current mods you can go stage 1 tune. Stage 2 tune requires a downpipe (exhaust) which can be had for around $200 on ebay. #4 · Feb 11, 2010 I used an expansion plug from auto parts store. painted it black. I also got the firewall door piece. You get better throttle response and less clutter in the engine bay. Its a 2 dollar mod thats well worth it. #5 · Feb 11, 2010 I ran the expansion plug INSIDE the pipe for awhile but would be hesitant to just put it in the throttle body tube. I read a horor story about a guy who did that and it flew out and put a huge dent in his hood. I wouldn't run it like that especially if you are chipped. #6 · Feb 11, 2010 Ya I read that story too.. hahah or you can add a clamp around the outside too if you are worried about the plug flying out #7 · Feb 15, 2010 For the money, it is definitely the best mod you can do. Personally, I found that after I plugged my noise pipe, the sound from my engine was much more to my liking, that noise pipe is exactly what it says, noise. Its super easy, cost like 2.35$ and you will feel a little more response from your throttle. Good luck #8 · Feb 17, 2016 I ended up buying the part (1k0145770k) from my local vw dealer ($160-170 plus tax) for my 2008 GLI (FSI engine). I was a little skeptic that this mod or fix would do anything except clear clutter and reduce noise. I was wrong, the throttle response is absolutely better with faster and more responsive feel. Probably not anymore total power but you get it faster, so it's faster. It's a B to get the old pipe out cause it's got the big Y junction. I was able to sneak it by but you'd might want to remove the fans first. I was also able to lift up the rain tray and sneak the actual sound speaker out from behind the fire wall. Long ratchet extensions, long needle-nose pliers, torx heads, and a ton of patience are a must for this project. Insert Quotes Post Reply
