p.1 #1 · Panasonic GX9 vs GX85
I am looking for a small camera to complement my Nikon DSLR. Something that I can put into a coat pocket and take with me on non-photography oriented walks and trips. The Panasonic GX85 looked very interesting, especially with the thin 12-32mm lens offered in the B&H package deal. The newer GX9 has some features that would be nice (e.g. focus stacking). But, the provided lens (12-60mm) is longer and it will no longer fit easily in a pocket. Any thoughts about the benefits of the GX9 vs GX85? Any suggestions for thinner zoom lenses that could be used with the GX9? Thanks.

Just sold my GX-85....even with the 12-32 lens it won't fit comfortably into any pants pocket unless you wear loose and I mean loose cargo pants. Spent the big bucks and replaced with Sony RX100M6 which does fit into my jeans

I've tried all the smaller bodies in an effort to do the same, wasted a lot of money along the way too, the only small body that packs a punch and actually fits in a pocket, a jeans pocket by the way or a shirt pocket, are the Ricoh GR series. Of course there is a tradeoff or two

So, I managed to get a hands-on with the GX85 (plus some other options). The comments are correct - the GX85 (and GX9) will be too big for pockets, even in the expanded way I was defining 'pocket' :-). The Sony RX100 ;lne looks interested and could be a better option. So, this thread maybe has reached it end.

I use the GX80 but only for telerange. For pocket use I have a Fuji x-e2s which with a 27mm f2.8 is very slim and fits in my pocket The GX80 s quite bulky probably because of the stabilization mechanism in the body

Focus stacking will work better with tripod which defeats your purpose. I did have gx85 and currently own gx9. Gx9 has 20m sensor if it matters.m to you. Tilting evf is good feature to have but dont use much. If you are going with panasonic for casual use gx85 should be enough.

Neither will fit comfortable in a pants pocket. But if you're just wanting it for a coat pocket, I'd choose the gx85

Late reply - I wasn't thinking of using focus stacking with a hand-held camera. I had two different interests - a 'pocket' camera as a back-up for travel and a camera that does focus stacking (with a tripod) that I could use to explore that technique.

I've been mulling the same issue. I may still look at the GX85 though at this point I'm leaning toward either the RX100 VA or the newer Canon G5X MII (for the slightly longer lens). I'm waiting to see if the new Canon's lens is any improvement on the existing model. If the issue were just IQ, the GX85 would be my choice - but 'pocket-ability' really is the issue.

If you're looking for a real pants-pocket camera, look for the old GM5 and a 12-32. That's the smallest m43 combo out there with any real usability (the 9/8 or 15/8 body cap lenses from Oly on a GM5 would be the smallest actual combo)

There doesn't seem to be too big of a difference between the two so I'd personally just go for the gx85 especially since you could get a used one for so cheap right now.
