Re: Pros vs Poor Mans Combo #50 October 18, 2019, 09:59:12 PM Before I became a Pro staffer for Dobyns ( the only one I belong to ) You would have thought I was a salesman for them. I just believe in their product that much. I have actually toned it down some to be more professional.I was just pointing out that we are different from most sites or I wouldn't be here. Thanks for your point of view. 3rd place 2017 UB IBASS 377.75"AOY 2018 IBASS Cool Casters 369.00"AOY 2019 IBASS Cool Casters 362.50"

Re: Pros vs Poor Mans Combo #51 October 19, 2019, 12:16:41 PM EZ, I think you'll find, at least I hope you do, that people here at UB will share what works best for them and at the same time the majority will tell you whatever works best for you is what you should use.I have been on the pro staff for many companies over my many years of fishing and yet I have readily recommended products from other companies if I felt they were right for what a person was looking for.An honest pro staffer is one because they use the products because they believe in them and they share their knowledge with others. The pro in pro staff means promotional not professional. I still get support and discounts from several companies one being Abu Garcia. But as much as I like their rods I have found I personally like Dobyns rods much better so those are what I recommend now.The folks here will tell you what they like and sometimes you might have t ask them why but they are always willing to tell you that why. That's one of the things that drew me to UB and keeps me here - the honesty. And figuring out what works best for you is part of the fun of the sport of fishing. Re: Pros vs Poor Mans Combo #52 October 19, 2019, 12:34:33 PM Cheaper than seeing a shrink and daily bar tab, all joking aside until I started visiting these fishing forums I was using $100 combos and did I catch fish yes but once I started learning about equipment and started spending a little more money on my equipment it's made it more enjoyable and not as physically painful, plus I believe it's made me a better angler using the proper tools to do a job. At the end of the day you have to get what fits in your budget,I'll sacrifice in something else to have extra money for my fishing. "Tight lines"

Re: Pros vs Poor Mans Combo #54 October 20, 2019, 06:06:15 AM I've been on staff for 4 different rod companies over the years, oddly what I fish now ( megabass, St.Croix, and Witch Doctor have no clue who I am. The internet has forced companies to change sales tactics. Most staff guys are pretty good and believe in what they are selling, some are like taking advice on golf clubs from someone who couldn't break a egg. Also some staff agreements require so to buy so many rods a year and even if you buying at 40% off there's still some profit for the manufacturer.

Quote from: zippyduck on October 18, 2019, 06:33:24 PMEZ,For years I steered people to Dobyns rods, and Daiwa baitcasters ,and Shimano spinning reels, and the correct one for the job. I had no affiliation with anyone.Recently I was offered a Pro staff job with Dobyns because of the good job I had been doing here. I still steer people to what is right for them. I do not receive any more for rods sold or words written. I get a certain percentage off Dobyns stuff and am expected to do no more than I had been doing.Since getting this position I have steered guys to BP rods, and Berkley lightning rods as that is what they could afford.Ultimate Bass is different from many sites as we will not put anything down but will endorse everything that works. Our best reel guru is always trying out different reels and giving an honest opinion on all of them. and he leans more toward the big two but has found gems in other companies. That makes this site so special we help everyone get the best they can afford.
Bought a Dobyn's off of Amazon and sent it back. This : Dobyns Rods Fury Series FR 735C Mag Heavy Power Ex-Fast Action Casting Rod, 7'3", Black/Green. Looks like a great pole right up until the last 10" and then just too must flex, too thin for a MAG HEAVY ? Am i missing something ? is that the "EXTRA FAST" action ?Ended up with 2 ARKS and really feel like I received 2 each $250.00 rods. They are awesome.

PSL too bad you ordered that Fury before finding UB. With a little bit more information, the suggestions would have probably been a bit different. For future reference check out this sticky thread for a general guide over on the Dobyns forum --> Dobyns designations Hope the info helps. Welcome to UB!! ~beer~ YouTube: Bassin'withCaptLou,

Im with you on the Arks rods. I have a Sniper that is just insane, and I only paid $85 shipped to me. As far as the Dobyns brand, they run light. If you are looking for a MH, get a H...etc. Fury is good as far as price, but way better could be found for the same price. I would not suggest anything below the Sierra line as far as quality/build. Champs are a nice rod, but again, not for the MSRP price they ask. Hell, not many rods are worth the MSRP price, especially...dare I say...GLoomis. My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

Re: Pros vs Poor Mans Combo #59 November 30, 2019, 02:13:00 PM Got to say that when I started looking into new fishing equipment the prices shocked me,and the length of rods. My first good equipment was an abu-garcia 5500c and a Cabela's Canadian series 5' 6" casting rod. My next upgrade involved me buying some second abu-garcia 4600c's off fleabay. The best two of those I upgraded with worm gear bearings and carbontex clutch washers. The most expensive rod I bought was a bps casting rod,no idea what version...Thing is by the time I put the parts into 4600's I had about the price of a new modern reel. So this time around I ordered a tatula. Going to find out if it's worth the sale price money I spent on it.. Enjoy yourself now,for you'll be a long time dead.

So true. I used to hold GLoomis is high regards as the best of the best. But in recent years, I think there's a few companies that have passed them up. 3rd place 2019 iBass - Cool Casters 2nd place 2019 iBass - Team Tournament

Re: Pros vs Poor Mans Combo #61 December 01, 2019, 06:35:08 AM I kinda have to agree, well, I don't know about passed but certainly narrowed the gap. The NRX remains the standard that everyone uses but certainly the MB destroyer is right there with it at a cheaper price. The conquest is a stronger rod than NRX but not everyone needs it and to me it's no better and maybe not as sensitive in my hands. The Z bone is a great rod but Kistler doesn't seem to bring NRX money on the secondary market and Phenix never could seem to get k2 going. The Gary Loomis Edge rods have been a disaster as was the 13 Archangel. ' Really the NRX has held on since I think 2012 ? without Shimano/Loomis having to do much but keep building them. The Shimano Expride is probably the best bang for the buck they have and I believe its based on the older JDM Final Dimension so it may not be all that new but a great rod.

Re: Pros vs Poor Mans Combo #62 December 01, 2019, 02:35:40 PM There are some excellent rods and reels out there that will work and keep with in your budget. Don't over look buying pre owned. I picked up a couple of super clean reels that were lightly used and well maintained and saved a bundle. Be patient. Print Go Up Pages 1 2 3 User actions
