2011/04/09 09:33:21 (permalink) i am thinking about getting a new cpu for my folding rig, becouse rigth now it is using a old pentium 4 3.0ghz and just by gpu folding its lagging when using the pc. so the question is should i get a intel core 2 quad q6600 2.40ghz for 120 $ or a intel core 2 quad q8200 2.33ghz for 95$ ?? :s the fsb on the q6600 is lower then the q8200 but the q820 is 45nm vs 65 on the q6600 so cant figure out witch is the best way to go. #1

Re:Q6600 vs Q8200 `? 2011/04/09 10:37:38 (permalink) What motherboard are you using? Some of the older 775 mb's don't support 45nm quads. From what I've seen a stock q6600 will get about 5-6k ppd, and a q8200 will get about 4-4.5k ppd. But the q8200 will use less power, and does not have virtualization. Re:Q6600 vs Q8200 `? 2011/04/09 11:28:21 (permalink) I'd say the Q6600, My Q8200 only folds 2-3k ppd (closer to 2 most of the time). It really is not meant for anything aside from everyday use/multi-tasking. #5

Re:Q6600 vs Q8200 `? 2011/04/09 13:26:05 (permalink) Out of the two i'd go with the Q6600. Imo the Q8200 is a nice quad but it's crippled not in the same league with the Q6600. BUT see if you can find either a Q9550 or a Q9650, they run cooler. Re:Q6600 vs Q8200 `? 2011/04/10 13:44:38 (permalink) Either a Q6600 or a Q9550. I think the Q8200's hindered by a lack of cache and a lack of chip speed at 2.33. Q6600 may be 2.4, but it has an 8MB total cache. #10

When you say stock, do you really mean stock clock rates, or do you mean with overclocking but stock heatsink and fan? Re:Q6600 vs Q8200 `? 2011/04/13 15:03:16 (permalink) Between my ppd, and other people complaining about folding making their computer unusable to some degree or other, it hit me that I might have adjusted my cpu usage % to avoid problems using the computer while folding. I checked and its at 75%. I can't believe I've been folding all this time at less than full throttle. I did it so long ago that I forgot. Part of my motivation might have been heat too, since I was originally in a Dell case. :-/ I just bumped it up to 98% we'll see what kind of difference that makes :-D post edited by TheClassic - 2011/04/13 15:39:41 Inspiron 530 Intel Core2 processor Q6600 (2.40Ghz 1066FSB) w/Quad Core Technology and 8MB cache FoxConn G33M based Dell board 6GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz eVGA GTX 570 SC OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS 600W Dell 20in E207WFP Flat Panel #15
