In regard to my '08 Rabbit with 80,000 miles. Even with a cold engine, just after starting, the radiator fan races like a jet and takes several minutes to quiet down. Is this a bearing issue as far as the noise is concerned or is this another known issue? I only seem to notice it from a stopped or slow speed. It happens quite regularly starting the engine. Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Feb 27, 2011 The large fan which is the fan module either took a dump and it's defaulting to max rpm, or one of your coolant sensors/wiring is faulting causing it to default to full speed. Check engine faults and it will tell you if the fan is bad or something else. #3 · Feb 28, 2011

I will take it in and have it looked at. It seems to be getting worse (louder, faster), even when the engine is cut off and I'm exiting the car it will race for 10-15 seconds. I tell people its a high performance fan LOL #5 · Mar 19, 2011 had the same problem.. luckily still had warranty from the dealership and the fixed it in 30 mins.. all it was was one fan was not spinning and the other fan was compensating for the other fan not working making it work twice as hard (this is what causes the loud noise) #6 · Apr 10, 2011 Just to update everyone; Dealer said the right cooling fan was going out. I could see it was spinning rather unsteady and the left fan was making up for it, hence the racing noise. I ordered the replacement part online and saved about $30 but still paid nearly $200 in labor for it's installation. Not a sound is heard now. I was also told to let it go for a long period would eventually result in the engine overheating. Word to the wise. #7 · Apr 16, 2011 labor should of been 30min to an hour slides out unbolt fan bolt on new one plug it back in viola. should of cost 60 to 80 bucks plus about 210 for fan 230 straight from VW #8 · Apr 20, 2011 I believe I was charged for two hours of labor and waited nearly three hours. The smaller one does not run, the larger one is working extra hard. Does this mean both need to be replaced? VW dealer wanted $1100+ to replace both! Outside of warranty

0 Reply #12 · Sep 20, 2011 if if is not running, replace the smaller one, then reassess the situation. most likely it will take care of the problem... sometimes the smaller fan will still work, however, the sensor goes bad on it. when this happens, it still causes the large fan to compensate. can be trickier to diagnose in this case. #13 · Sep 20, 2011 I"m selling two brand new fans that fit your car. click the link in my sig.... #14 · Oct 24, 2011 BTW for for anyone else w this prob. I bought my rabbit 08 rabbit w 70k and it did the same exact thing. What "gteeter", what your dealer said about one extra hard to compensate for the other is what i was told too right here on vwoc.. i ended up popping the hood and playing around w the fan a bit turning it by hand (w the car off) a few months ago and have never heard the loud fan again. Now my bunny hums silently while idling instead of sounding like a jet engine at stop lights. Worked like a charm! 0 Reply #16 · May 18, 2012 I just replied to another post about this, if your fan does fail, ecstuning has an aftermarket one for 109 and you can install yourself. Easy and cheap, screw the dealerships #19 · Aug 6, 2019 Can the smaller fan be replaced without placing the car on a lift? I have read that in order to replace the fans, they have to be taken out from the bottom, and that there needs to be enough clearance to get the entire fan housing out. That being said, I am not entirely sure what is going on with mine, and if the smaller fan needs to be replaced? The larger fan has been racing. I poped the hood, and the smaller fan spins freely. And, some of the time if I spin it manually, it starts spinning on its own. So it works, and it's getting electricity. Not sure what the deal is? 0 Reply #17 · Aug 6, 2017 i brought my car in for a charge test and a battery change due to a battery drain problem, when i picked up the car friday afternoon i noticed a weird noise, this morning i noticed it was the upper fan that was spinning at max speed. would like to know if it's still safe to drive the car to work for a bit until i can find alternative transport to drop off the car back at the dealership. #18 · Sep 24, 2017 I had the same racing radiator fan issue. I replaced the complete dual fan assembly with a Temtec unit. Video on youtube is 100% correct. Jack, Jack stand and tools. 100.00 for assembly 2 hours of my time. Van is very quiet 3 months working great. VW wanted 900.00. Insert Quotes Post Reply
