Location and Uses[]

A Link to the Past[]

The Red Mail is the third Mail Link can wear in A Link to the Past and is the best defense. It is found in Ganon's Tower in the Dark World. When this tunic is worn, it reduces damage taken by half over the Blue Mail, therefore a quarter of normal damage, making the young hero durable.[3] Additionally, it turns Link's cap purple.

Link's Awakening DX[]

In Link's Awakening DX, the Red Clothes, unlike other appearances, double the damage of Link's Sword attacks and sends enemies flying when he hits them,[1] acting like a permanent Piece of Power, except that his walking speed remains the same. They are accessible only after completing the special Color Dungeon hidden in the Graveyard, where the Fairy Queen will allow Link to choose between the Blue or Red Clothes. Once he selects one of the special tunics, he can switch to the other by speaking to the Fairy Queen again. The Blue Clothes doubles Link's defense.

A Link Between Worlds[]

The Red Mail in A Link Between Worlds is typically found in a Big Chest hidden on the fourth floor of Lorule Castle. By extinguishing the torches in the area, an invisible platform leading to the chest will be illuminated. If Link has not yet obtained the Blue Mail, it will instead be in this chest; the Red Mail can then be found in the Swamp Palace. As in A Link to the Past, Wearing the Red Mail will reduce the damage Link takes by a further half over the Blue Mail's defense.[4]

Trivia[]

  • The Red Mail is based on the effects of the Red Ring from The Legend of Zelda.
  • The Goron Tunic from Ocarina of Time strongly resembles the Red Mail/Clothes and it adds resistance from heat and fire-based attacks. However, it doesn't grant Link actual defense nor increases attack power.
  • If Link wears the Red Clothes in Link's Awakening DX and then acquires a Piece of Power, his attack strength becomes four times the normal amount. When the hero obtains the Koholint Sword, it can inflict 8 times the regular sword's, resulting in very powerful strikes.
  • The character Gramps from A Link Between Worlds, despite appearing to be wearing Link's Green Clothes, actually uses the Red Mail in battle, though it's not visible in gameplay.
