Van normally idles @ 800 rpm. Randomly goes up to 1000.rpm fan in quickly. So coolant must be hot. Is this it regenerating itself any thoughts .thanks. Top DW2207 Hyper Poster Posts: 886 Joined: Tue Oct 01, 2019 8:49 am Engine size/power: 1.9 TDI (104bhp)

I believe so, my diesel Astra use to do the exact same thing. When this happens just continue driving as normal and try not to turn the car off until it as finished mate Top Seaview Caddy2k Groupie Posts: 41 Joined: Fri Jul 19, 2019 2:44 pm Engine size/power: 2.0 CR TDI (108bhp)

100% yes, it increases the revs to warm up the dpf filter to burn off the particles, if you go down the motorway 3000rpm for 10min that will manually force a dpf regeneration. Hope this helps Top Seaview Caddy2k Groupie Posts: 41 Joined: Fri Jul 19, 2019 2:44 pm Engine size/power: 2.0 CR TDI (108bhp)

Thanks for that. Been told I don't do enough miles in Van. However, when I bought it ,@ 16 months old, there was 16k on clock ,so it hadn't been stood still ,very much. And it was regenerating itself then. Top SnoWhite Twin Turbo poster Posts: 460 Joined: Sat Aug 15, 2015 6:41 pm Engine size/power: 2.0 CR TDI (108bhp)

1000 miles per month is not really the thing to focus on. What is really bad for the DPF is loads of short journeys as that will rarely if ever allow the engine temperature to get hot enough to allow the soot caught in the DPF to be burnt off. Conversely if those 16k miles were all long haul trips up and down motorways then you are probably right in assuming the DPF should be in a reasonably healthy state. It is a real shame VW never added some sort of visual DPF regen warning light on the dash - as that would at least allow people to know when a regen is underway and give them the option to extend their journey until the regen is complete. For now, especially if you do loads of short trips, it is well worth getting into the habit of listening in case you hear the fans running mental fast before shutting off the engine. If necessary turn off the radio and heater blower to be sure the radiator fans are not in hyperdrive mode. Sadly once several DPF regens get aborted and are uncomplete it may need dealer intervention to get the DPF soot level down or worse still may be too late and you will be forking out for a new DPF - and they are not cheap! The other thing to note is if you have a Euro 5 Caddy which has had that emissions recall done, then the DPF, EGR and Catalyst will now be working much harder than before - as those emissions obviously have to go somewhere! Hence a lot of Euro 5 owners have not taken up VW's kind invitation to have their software updated. Standard I do not like VW Diesel engines, are brought toooo far back with software on the ecu. Feels like VW doesn’t want the mappings smooth, they want cars back in for repairs is my feeling when I drive a standard caddy. Custom remapping is the best way to really enjoy the engine. No stupid repairs and only maintenance but only twice as fast changing the oil and filters what VW describes, never issues, not with the 1.9TDI, not with the 1.6 TDI and even not with the 2.0TDI. No extra oil consumption. Fans, yes hear them often in summer time, in winter not. Only in winter when I went on the autobahn to get rid fast of the liters diesel :) EGR never troubles, DPF same never issues and no black smoke via the exhaust. Just burns clean by itself. Temperature gets high enough and the limiter to protect the turbo and parts for too much heat kicks in as well. Drives really well, and modding a caddy is fun as well, the backspace is very handy. Couple of times a year I drive big distances, for the rest 1 until 10km per time so it’s normally not good for a diesel, however I never have really trouble with the engines.
