1. TECHNICS - VW - Read ODB2 Diagnostic Error Messages.
In a previous post, we have discussed how to check your car diagnostic error messages using a cheap ELM327 ODB2 Bluetooth Adapter and the Car Scanner ELM OBD2 Android App.
After 70.000 kilometers, my 2.0 TDI engine suddenly lid the Engine Management LED.
After inspecting the diagnostic error messages using the tools mentioned above, I got the following error codes :
- P154B
- 31489
- 31490
They are all related to a faulty PDF Differential Pressure Sensor.
This is a serious issue. Don’t keep driving your car in this situation. Because of the faulty sensor your car can no longer execute the DPF regeneration which will result in a blocked DPF. This way you go from a relative cheap repair to a very expensive repair.
2. TECHNICS - VW - Replace Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) differential pressure sensor
Open the hood.
Remove the top engine cover.
Carefully open the heat protection sleeve.
The faulty Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) differential pressure sensor had the VW part number 04L 906 051 G.
Withdraw the small grey security clip and then unplug the electrical connector.
Unscrew the torx screw.
Now carefully unclip the hose retention clip below the sensor.
Then carefully pull the sensor off both hoses. Mark the position of each hose so you don’t accidentally switch them when installing the new sensor.
The replacement Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) differential pressure sensor has the VW part number 04L 906 051L. It’s an improved version and cost 79.30 €.
Firmly reconnect both hoses to the new sensor.
Reseat the hose retention clip.
Place and fasten the torx screw.
Connect the electrical connector.
Finally close the heat protection sleeve and reinstall the top engine cover.
Don’t be tempted to buy cheap alternative sensors. Ask your dealer, he knows best what parts are reliable.
After replacing the faulty sensor, use the tools mentions above to clear all relevant error codes from the car memory. Then start the engine and take the car for a spin. See if any errors return. In my case, all problems were solved.
In some cases the new sensor needs to be adapted to the system. This has to be done by your dealer.

Dear Marc,
Following a control unit replacement, the A sensor melted down (Passat B8, 2016, 2.0 CRTDI). The mechanic replaced it, but since the opposite-side connector had also melted, he fitted a new one onto the wire. After the replacement, and about 500 km of driving, the check engine light came on. The fault code was P2456.
Out of curiosity, I inspected the sensor and noticed that the wiring order is not the same as before: previously it was 1 power supply / 2 ground / 3 signal, but now pins 1 and 3 are swapped. The damaged part was an AG 50/15 TN3 type, while the newly installed one is a Bosch 0 986 280 715. I couldn’t find a datasheet for the latter, but the pin numbering inside the connector housing matches the numbering of the failed unit.
Based on what I described, I strongly suspect that something was miswired.
Thanks a lot for your help!
