ives I So the details are simple... but apparently the fix is not. I was driving around the country on a road trip when I started hearing a squealing sound at idle and when turning hard at low speeds. Under the hood it looked like the serpentine tensioner spring probably went bad and it was shaking all over (aka, not providing any tension), SO, it had it replaced with a new one, and with it a new belt. The squealing went away. 2,000 miles later, it suddenly started happening again, getting worse and worse over about 3 weeks. I brought it to by trusty family VW mechanic who's worked out our TDIs and other cars for ever. Tensioner seemed fine to him, (as it should be, it was only 5,000 miles old by then), the belt seemed fine, but looked 'large' or maybe stretched out.... SO he put on a new one. Squealing stops. Squealing starts again after 1,000 miles.... slowly getting noisier and noisier again..... ...so what do you all think I should replace next? Power Steering pump? (PS works fine by the way, feels like it did when the car was new)... Pulleys? Tensioner again!? It's a 2004 GLS Jetta TDI with the PD engine. Great condition otherwise... aside from VERY recently, the clock and Odometer reset randomly.... and, recently it was smelling VERY rich during a day of driving... as if it was super cold out and it was having a hard time... but it was 70 degrees outside and driving was light and simple. IDEAS?! THANKS. #1 · Apr 8, 2012 So the details are simple... but apparently the fix is not. It can also ruin the belt tensioner. #3 · Apr 8, 2012 i was about to say the same thing.. the 1 way clutched pulley on the alternator fails quite often, and when they fail, they usually take the tensioner out with them, and make ALL SORTS OF NOISE.. 0 Reply #4 · Apr 10, 2012 alright... ... replacing my pulleys tomorrow... we'll see if this works... #5 · Apr 13, 2012 it worked... alt pulley replaced = No more noise! Cheers! #6 · Apr 13, 2012 Congrats  Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk 2 0 Reply #7 · Apr 13, 2012 glad we could help you out! Insert Quotes Post Reply
