SExy__Sonata S Well I finally decided to tackle this Idea I had, It worked but took a little bit of work and some patience. I first upgraded the low beams to Sylvania Silverstar bulbs and I was overall happy with the slightly whiter light, It was not HID bright but it was enough to justify the purchase of the bulbs. I still wanted more light on the road so as I said I decided to tackle this mod and let me tell you, It was worth it! Below is a walk through with pictures. [attachment=21324:H11.jpg] I went with H11 Silverstar Bulbs for the fogs so that they would match the color of the low beams. [attachment=21325:Bulbs.jpg] Here is the base of the 2 different bulbs, as you can see the H8 is on the left and the new H11 is on the right. [attachment=21326:Bulbs_1.jpg] This picture shows the difference in the locking tabs, On the H11 there is a wide tab that will not fit in the housing this it the part that needs to be modified to fit. [attachment=21327:Dremel.jpg] [attachment=21328:Dremel_bit.jpg] I used a Dremel to complete this mod, I used a very tiny grinding stone. Honestly without a Dremel I dont see how it can be done. I tried to use side cutters and they would not fit. The grinding stone is very tiny and it allows you to remove a little bit of metal at a time. It maybe took 5 minuted worth of grinding and both tabs were reduced in width to match the H8 tab. [attachment=21329:New_bulb_base.jpg] That is one of the finished H11 bulbs next to the stock H8 bulb, You will see that the tab is now exactly the same size. (The bulb without the red gasket is the trimmd H11 bulb I had to remove this gasket to gain extra clearance) The drivers side bulb was rather easy to remove (it is easiest to unplug the harness before removing the bulb on both sides) The passenger side was rather a pain and I had to take the 2 threaded bolts out of the splash shield to get to the back of the fog light. After test fitting the H11 it fit and locked right in, I plugged the harness back in and the drivers side was done... I turned the headlights on and flipped the fogs switch on and wow 55 watts of light instead of 35. I left one old bulb in durring this test and you could definatly see a difference between the two. I put the other H11 bulb in and turned the lights back on so that everything was working (both Silverstar low beams and both new Silverstar H11 Fogs) it definitly increases the light on the road. I took a test drive around my block and the benefits of the slightly whiter light from the Silverstars was great but the higher wattage fogs (now matching the wattage and color of the low beams) was amazing to say the least. Now some of you may argue that having the brighter fogs is bad for incliment weather and I would agree, but I can count on one hand how many times in the 5 years we have had heavy fog where true "fog" lights would have been good. Also these really dont cast any extra glare for oncoming drivers because they sit so low to the ground. I'm one of those annoying people who use the fogs as "driving lights" because I want to be able to see the road in front of me. These help tremendously. I tried to get a before and after picture but my camera only captured a bunch of glare and it did not do any justice for this mod. I hope this write up can help someone complete this mod, I know I'm happy with it. BTW I'm glad I can finally contribute something useful to the forum. #1 · Nov 18, 2010 Well I finally decided to tackle this Idea I had, It worked but took a little bit of work and some patience. I used H11 HIDs in my foglights and I didnt need to cut anything. I dont know if maybe HID bulbs and the Silverstar bulbs are different but I definitely didnt need to cut anything. Just curious #3 · Nov 18, 2010 QUOTE (fdnj48 @ Nov 17 2010, 09:57 PM) index.php?act=findpost&pid=372635

After doing a little research online I did notice that LED and HID bulbs listed H8 and H11 were interchangable but any hallogen bulb had the wider tab on the base. I did a test fit before doing any trimming and the H11 would not fit at all. I didn't mind doing the trimming and I'm glad I didn't have to modify the car in any way because I would not have done this. #4 · Nov 18, 2010 i did the same thing with my led H11 fog lights. one tab is a little bit too wide to fit in. mine were a little easier as they only had one thin layer of metal. just some long nose pliers and a little twist back and forth to break off part of the large tab. #5 · Nov 18, 2010 Cool thanx for clearing that up for me. I was just a little confused about it. #6 · Nov 18, 2010 Great walkthrough, but I am missing a very critical part of your post....why did you do this? What is the difference between H11 and H8s that made you want to switch? My understanding is that the different types of bulbs are just in the shape of the connector. Some companies use H11, some use H8. I dont get why you would want to change from H8 to H11? Please help me understand. #7 · Nov 18, 2010 H8 bulbs run at 35 Watts and H11 bulbs run at 55 Watts. This higher wattage results in more light on the road directly infront of the car, now there is an even amount of color and light. Also I wanted to upgrade to a slightly whiter colored bulb to match the Silverstars but they are not made in H8 so inorder to get Silverstar bulbs I had to switch to H11's If you look at the second picture and blow it up to full size you will see the Red label says 35 W and the Blue label (Silverstar) says 55 W #8 · Nov 18, 2010 QUOTE (SExy__Sonata @ Nov 18 2010, 10:04 AM) index.php?act=findpost&pid=372736

Aaah! That was the part I was missing! :) Makes perfect sense now! :) #9 · Nov 18, 2010 Just be advised, just because you can get it to fit it doesnt mean all will be well. After a bit of use keep a eye on the color and condition of the chrome backing in the fog light. A higher wattage bulb creates more heat and in some light assemblies it can cause the chrome reflective surface of the inside of the light to discolor and sometimes distort from the heat. #10 · Nov 23, 2010 I'm looking to upgrade mine as well but worried about ruining the housing. #11 · Nov 23, 2010 I also saw on another post that some people had their foglight housings melt because of higher heat from 55w bulbs. Did you have any problems with yours? #12 · Nov 23, 2010 QUOTE (ak969 @ Nov 22 2010, 07:21 PM) index.php?act=findpost&pid=373979

I think this is the link to the posts you are refering to. http://www.hyundai-forums.com/index.php?showtopic=19475 I have the same worry about adding heat to the fogs. Maybe the added heat is less of an issue during cold weather, and will be a big problem during daytime use in a traffic jam in July. #13 · Dec 31, 2011 Hey everyone I know this is pretty much a dead thread but just incase anyone wanted an update on the condition of the foglight housings they are fine. They have been installed for a little over a year and for the most part they have been run full time since its second nature for me to flip the lights on everytime I start the car, I leave the fogs switched on so they come on with the low beams. I will be converting to HID'S very soon, I just placed the order for 2 kits for the lows and fogs and also a relay harness. the only reason for this is because I blew a low beam bulb and rather then buying more silverstars I figured I would splurge and go with HID'S this time around. #14 · Sep 5, 2015 Fog lights are for use in fog, not for "shining light on the road in front of the car". When you drive with them on all the time, you dazzle oncoming motorists. The law, which states that misuse of front fog lights is an offence, should be enforced rigorously as the type of nonsense you guys are talking about just makes your front fog lights a complete hazard to other road users and may well cause an accident on b roads and other minor roads. Have some consideration for your fellow road users and NEVER drive with fog lights (front or rear) on unless you are driving in conditions of poor visibility, such as fog! They are not called fog lights for nothing after all! We all share the roads, so please try to behave and take care not to blind oncoming vehicles and pedestrians. It's common sense! #15 · Sep 5, 2015 Let's see...this thread was started 5 years ago. I think most of the people posting in the thread have sold their Hyundais and moved along. :beathorse: 0 Reply Insert Quotes Post Reply
