#4 · Jun 17, 2021 (Edited) You won’t find any production ammo for a 1889 and any surplus is worth too much to shoot...even if it would go bang (typically doesn’t). It’s a handload only cartridge now a days. Do not use GP11 or commercial 7.5x55 made for the later actions (forward locking lugs)! Given there is no load data for it, Swiss rifle shooters have robbed from the 30-40 Krag load data since the are similar in case capacity and performance. You want to be under 38,000 CUP. When I had a 1889, here is what I used: PPU 7.5x55 1x fired trimmed to 53.5, resized and primed w/ CCI 200, IMR 3031 @ 32 to 34 grains 308 150 grain FMJ. Now a days, I’d shoot a cast in it if I had one...around 20 gr of 2400 with a 311332 180gr would probably be great. As an alternate, GP11 could be broken down, trimmed and reloaded with 174ish equivalent 30-40 Krag data. As usual start low and work up. I've got 2 bags of 7.5x53.5mm ammo I'd be willing to sell. They are reloads that were not very well labeled that well. I thought were 7.5x55, but when I got them I found out they were 7.5x53.5mm. I'd have to count them for the round count, but I think it's about 90 rounds. #11 · Nov 3, 2021 Definitely interested #12 · Nov 3, 2021 Since they are reloads of seemingly unknown provenance, I would suggest tearing them down (inertial bullet pullers are your friend) and reloading them per stewbaby's advice. I would not shoot reloads of unknown provenance/history, I'd consider them as components only and take it very easy since the history of the brass is unknown. Yeah, I'm paranoid, but as of the last counting, I still have all of my fingers and both eyes... The general rule I was always taught is to only trust your own reloads. Insert Quotes Post Reply
