Yes, one of my friends combined the soul-crushing perfectionism that gave her a PhD and her passion for Revolutionary War history to the most noble of endeavors: writing painstakingly accurate historical ABO. The worldbuilding for the ABO is well-developed and plot/thematically relevant, and the actual real-life worldbuilding is incredibly detailed and accurate... to the point where almost all the secondary characters are historical people with their actions and words based in their true reported personalities.

There's even a damn bibliography.

And despite being set during the American Revolution, it's far from the "rah-rah America" propaganda that pervades 99% of tales written by Americans about this time period; neither is it pro-British colonialists, and it manages to not white-wash any of the incredibly awful human rights things from the time period too.

It's just about people and also how war sucks--both externally and internally. Matthew and Josiah are both likable characters with secrets and their own pains and shames that they battle in their minds every day.

Yes, there are only two chapters so far, but the advantage of this being an irl friend is that I know they've got it finished and will update weekly. If they don't I know where they live. Highly recommend. :)

Is it just me, or are people online over-identifying with their so-called activism, to the point that they write “story analysis” like they’re trying to cancel a celebrity?

They’ll list every flaw and wrongdoing of a character and then conclude that anyone who likes the character is a bad person, or that the character is badly written simply because they do bad things.

Another weird phenomenon I’ve seen is in a fandom I’m in. The show is focused on female characters, but there’s a male deuteragonist, and half the fandom acts like caring about him is some form of misogyny, like he’s not literally the second most important character in the story.

Yeah, it’s leftover childish thinking reflecting black-and-white morality and ignorance at the expense of nuance and actual empathy. It also neglects the wide, wide, wide scope of literary criticisms and the various theories that exist, of which “moralism” really isn’t ever considered a valid school of criticism.
