Type of Dual Connectivity

Home LTE NB-IoT 5G(NR-NSA)

Today, we will learn about different type of Dual Connectivity between NR and LTE. If you are interested in learning more about 5G please click here.

What is MR-DC?

MR-DC stands for Multi-Radio Dual Connectivity. UEs which supportmultiple Tx/Rx can be configured to utilize resources from two different nodes. One of these nodes could provide NR access and the other one could provide either E-UTRA or NR access. One node will act as the Master Node (MN) and the other as the Secondary Node (SN).

MR-DC with the EPC (legacy LTE Core):

Legacy LTE (E-UTRAN) supports MR-DC through EN-DC (E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity).

1) EN-DC

DUT (device) shall connect to one eNB that is acting as a master-node (MN) and one en-gNB acting as a secondary-node (SN). The master-node (eNB) would be connected to the EPC via the S1 interface and to the secondary-node (en-gNB) via the X2 interface. Note: en-gNB could also be connected to the EPC via the S1-U interface and other en-gNBs via the X2-U interface.(Please read my 5G deployment article for more understanding)

MR-DC with the 5GC (5G core):

This dual connectivity can be supported only when operator already has 5G core. The possible MR-DC options are mentioned below:

1) NGEN-DC

In this MR-DC, NG-RAN supports NG-RAN E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity. In this dual connectivity, device (DUT) is connected to one ng-eNB which acts as a master-node and one gNB which acts as a secondary-node. Here master-node (ng-eNB) shall connect with the 5GC and secondary-node (gNB) shall connect with ng-eNB via Xn interface.

2) NE-DC

In this MR-DC, NG-RAN supports NR-E-UTRA Dual Connectivity. In this dual connectivity, device (DUT) is connected to one gNB which acts as a master-node and one ng-eNB which acts as a secondary-node. Here master-node (gNB) shall connect with the 5GC and secondary-node (ng-eNB) shall connect with gNB via Xn interface.

3) NR-DC

In this MR-DC, NG-RAN supports NR-NR Dual Connectivity. In this dual connectivity, device (DUT) is connected to one gNB which acts as a master-node and another gNB which acts as a secondary-node. Here master-node (gNB) shall connect with the 5GC via NG interface and Secondary-node (gNB) shall connect with master gNB via Xn interface. Note: The second gNB could also be connected to the 5GC via the NG-U interface. Reference: 3gpp 37.340

Dual Connectivity:

Dual Connectivity feature implies that a device is simultaneously connected to two cells. The E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) feature provides support for 5G New Radio (NR) with EPC. A DUT (device) which is connected to an eNodeB acts as a Master Node (MN) and an en-gNB acts as a Secondary Node (SN). The eNodeB is connected the S1 interface to the EPC through and through the X2 interface to the en-gNB. The en-gNB can be connected through the S1-U interface to the EPC and through the X2-U interface to other en-gNBs. If the Device supports dual connectivity with NR, then it must set the DCNR bit to "dual connectivity with NR supported" in the UE network capability IE of the Attach Request/Tracking Area Update Request message. If the Device indicates that it supports dual connectivity with NR in the Attach Request/Tracking Area Update Request message, and the MME decides to restrict the use of dual connectivity with NR for the UE, then it sets the RestrictDCNR bit to "Use of dual connectivity with NR is restricted" in the EPS network feature support IE of the Attach Accept/Tracking Area Update Accept message. In the EPS network feature support IE of the Attach Accept/Tracking Area Update Accept message, ff the RestrictDCNR bit is set to "Use of dual connectivity with NR is restricted", the UE gives the indication that dual connectivity with NR is restricted to the upper layers. If the DUT supports DCNR and it is also configured on MME, and if HSS sends ULA/IDR with "Access-Restriction" carrying "NR as Secondary RAT Not Allowed","NR Restriction" bit is sent by MME, set in "Handover Restriction List" IE during Attach/TAU/Handover procedures. Similarly, the RestrictDCNR bit is set to "Use of dual connectivity with NR is restricted" by MME in the EPS network feature support IE of the Attach Accept/Tracking Area Update Accept message. Accordingly, UE provides indication to the upper layers that dual connectivity with NR is restricted. In the "Initial Context Setup Request" message for TAU and Attach procedure, the "Handover Restriction List" IE is present with data forwarding procedure, in the "Handover Required" message for S1 handover procedure and in the "Downlink NAS Transport" message for TAU without active flag procedure.

Is this only for NR devices connecting to both EPC and NGC? i.e. not for an LTE device to enable connectivity to a NGC?

cell selection part-1

Home                 LTE                NB-IoT               5G(NR-NSA) In this section, we will learn about cell selection basics for SA and LTE. What is cell selection? If a device is under circumstances where UE needs to be switched on or after UE has left RRC connected mode or UE returns to a coverage area, it sees many base stations around it. Many a times UE might be surrounded by multiple base stations from different operators. So from this many base stations, UE can register to only one cell. So to register to a specific cell UE goes through a dedicated process. This specific decision making process where UE decides to which cell to camp on is known as cell selection. Is the initial cell selection procedure reacquired in the case of NSA ? When UE is connected to MCG that time only cell selection procedure is reacquired. Note: ENDC cel... Read more

5G Deployment Option-3/3a/3x

Image Home                 LTE                NB-IoT            5G(NR-NSA)   Hi Guys today we are learning about 5G deployment options, if you want to know more about other 5G deployment option please  click here Option 3: EN-DC (EUTRA-NR Dual Connectivity) Option 3 represents a network having both LTE and NR radio access, but using only the EPC core of LTE to route the Control signals. In this option, LTE is used as the control plane anchor for NR, and both LTE and NR are used for user data traffic.(user plane). It could also be called as Non-Standalone (NSA) NR in Evolved Packet System. The only difference between Options 3 and 3A is based on whether the user plane data is sent to NR directly or via the LTE RAN. This standardization was concluded in 3GPP Rel-15. This is a possible first step in the migration towards 5G-SA. This option wi... Read more

Soft Handover vs Hard Handover

Home                 LTE                NB-IoT            5G(NR-NSA) Now before we move to other things like measurements in handover, handover decision, handover procedure, handover interruption time, and mobility robustness optimization, let us take a look into difference between soft handover and hard handover. Soft Handover Hard Handover The handover in which radio links are added and removed in a way that MS always keeps at least one radio link to the UTRAN is known as soft handover. The handover in which all the old radio links in MS are removed before the new radio links are established is known as hard handover. This can also be simplified as make before break This can also be simplified as break before make As call drop rate is lower this handover is used to lower the rate of call drop. In... Read more

5G abbreviations

Image Home                 LTE                NB-IoT            5G(NR-NSA)   As per readers request this article is based on some 5G abbreviations (PCell,spCell,Scell,PSCell,MCG.SCG,Master-Node,Secondary-Node) for better understanding. What is Master Node? Master node:  The node (radio access node) that provides the control plane connection to the core network in case of multi radio dual connectivity (MR-DC). For example, it can be master eNB in EN-DC, a Master ng-eNB in NGEN-DC What is Secondary Node? Secondary node:   the radio access node, with no control plane connection to the core network, providing additional resources to the UE in case of MR-DC. For example, It may be an en-gNB in EN-DC or a Secondary ng-eNB (in NE-DC). What is MCG? MCG: Master Cell group It is a group of serving cells associated with the Maste... Read more

SIB1

Home                 LTE                NB-IoT            5G(NR-NSA) Hi Guys today we are learning SIB1 in detail for LTE. SIB1 Why SIB1 is required for initial attach process? Once uplink synchronization between the UE and the network has been established and the UE has read the MIB, the UE waits for System Information Block Type 1 (SIB1) which carries cell access related information and supplies the UE with the scheduling of other system information blocks. Reading SIB1 is mandatory for the UE to gain access to the network as the UE cannot know about the sequences it has to transmit in PRACH or the transmit power at which eNodeB is transmitting or the subframe/UL-DL pattern in case of TDD without decoding the SIB. If the UE is unable to decode SIB it will simply abandon that network Using which channel to transmit SIB1? The channel mapping of SIB1 ... Read more

DC Carrier in NR

Image Home                 LTE                NB-IoT               5G(NR-NSA) In this article, we will learn the basics of DC Carrier and why it is needed. Why in NR, DC subcarrier is not reserved like LTE? With legacy LTE (4G) it was decided that all devices (UE) should be capable of the maximum carrier bandwidth of 20MHz (UE can also support 10/15/5/3 MHz). This was a reasonable assumption at the time given the relatively modest bandwidth compared to NR, Whereas NR is designed to support very wide bandwidths up to 400MHz (for FR2) and 100Mhz (for FR1) for a single carrier. As well as NR supports multiple numerologies on the same transmitted carrier frequency. It is not necessary that all devices can support up to 400 MHz Bandwidth, hence in NR BWP concept is introduced. (To learn more about BWP Click here ). Note: in the above and below NR case figur...
