I've spent a bit of time with my son's Viking 1. Overall, I'm very impressed with it. My son is 5 and on it's shortest setting, it's possibly just a tad long, but it'll grow as he does. It's really simple to set up, even Callum kind of has it sussed. It can also pick up objects pretty well down. Small coins at a depth of 4 inches were easliy picked up, anything deeper and the MD really needed to be tuned perfectly. But I was able to get a £2 coin at around 6 inches. Being a non motion detector, all the signals were spot on right above the target. It was a little more expensive than I was planning on spending on my son's 1st detector, but the Viking name seems pretty well known and other than the really poorly rated National Geographic detectors, I only saw 2 others worth considering. The Bounty Hunter Junior looked pretty good, the Scan Master was also another well known name, but at the price, I thought it would just be a glorified toy. Anyway, I went for the Viking 1 and certainly don't regret it. It'll be intersting to see how it performs against my Ace 150 when it arrives. I started out with an early equivalent of the Viking 1 it was brilliant and got me hooked, as you say perfect pinpointing. I used to have as much fun then with the Viking as do now with my present machine, it should give your son a sound footing. ::g Minelab SE with Pro Coil and Sunray X1 Probe. Top Post Reply
