Vikings: Every Marriage Of The Main Characters, Ranked By Longevity

Love triangles, seductions, and affairs abound in the world of Vikings where life is short and death is just around the corner. There are plenty of whirlwind romances and marriages cut short by the death of a spouse.

Some of the marriages in Vikings were doomed from the beginning, while others proved they had staying power. Whether short-lived or long-lasting, the intensity of emotion shown in many Vikings' romances makes for great viewing.

Ubbe & Margrethe

Fans never expected Ubbe and Margrethe to last very long. They were married for a very short time, perhaps a year. For years Margrethe was a slave who served in Queen Aslaug's home. She was involved with all of Aslaug's sons, who treat her as a plaything.

Tired of seeing her disused and thrown about from son to son, she is eventually freed by Ubbe, who then asks her to marry him. She accepts but never seems to be particularly in love with him. Even when married to him, she was also seeing Ubbe's brother Hvitserk.

Ivar & Freydis

This marriage between two manipulative and bitter individuals was never going to last long. The whole liaison is one of the worst relationships in the Vikings series. When Freydis gives birth to a son with a deformity, Ivar rejects the child and decides to kill him.

He leaves the child out in the woods, just as Ragnar once did to Ivar. This time though, no one intervenes to save the child. Ivar strangles Freydis soon after, bringing an end to their marriage after only about a year.

Bjorn & Ingrid

Ingrid is the last woman to marry Bjorn. He is already married to Gunnhild at this time, but she cannot conceive children. She accepts his choice to have two wives so that he can produce sons.

Ingrid herself seems more interested in Bjorn's status than anything else. They are married for only a short time before Bjorn's death.

Bjorn & Thorunn

Many Vikings marriages seem to last just long enough to bring a child or two into the world. This one is no different. After being disfigured in battle, Thorunn sinks into an extreme depression.

She is convinced that her husband can no longer want her, and she is unable to feel much love or concern for their infant daughter. She eventually leaves, never to be seen again. Her marriage with Bjorn probably lasted about a year.

Bjorn & Torvi

After being married to Jarl Borg and the abusive Erlunder, Torvi was due for a good marriage. Bjorn Ironside, perhaps the kindest of Ragnar's sons, provides a sharp contrast to the kind of men she was used to and quickly captured her heart.

Unfortunately, Bjorn falls out of love with Torvi, but the two are able to end the marriage amicably, with mutual respect and appreciation. They have two children together, Hali and Asa, and were probably together for at least 4 years.

Bjorn & Gunnhild

After proposing to Snaefrid but then losing her, Bjorn and Gunnhild become involved and eventually marry. She is the first woman he feels he truly loves and understands. Bjorn and Gunnhild are married for perhaps a few years before his death.

Ubbe & Torvi

After Ubbe's failed marriage to Margrethe and Torvi's sadness over losing Bjorn, the two decide to try again with each other. This turns out to be one of the best decisions Ubbe makes. They travel to Iceland and Greenland together and eventually find what is thought to be North America, probably Nova Scotia. They have one son together, named Ragnar for his grandfather.

Since the show ends with these two together, fans don't know how long this marriage will last. However, Ubbe and Torvi seem to be a good match. They are both warriors who travel and fight together. They also have a history of fondness for each other.

Lagertha & Sigvard

After leaving Ragnar with his new wife, Aslaug, Lagertha moves to Hedeby. There she marries Earl Sigvard, a man she does not love. The Earl himself is an abusive man who Lagertha eventually kills.

She then becomes the next Earl of Hedeby and consolidates quite a bit of power. It is not clear how long they were married for but it was likely between five and seven years.

Ragnar & Aslaug

These two came together while Ragnar was still in love with his first wife Lagertha. While Ragnar was hoping that Lagertha would agree to share him with Aslaug, Lagertha was humiliated and angry with Ragnar for putting her in such a position. Ragnar always seemed to regret his choice, and his relationship with Asluag was rocky from the beginning.

After only a few years, Ragnar and Asluag began to grow further apart, staying together mainly for the children and political reasons. It is unclear whether they were still officially considered married when Ragnar left Kattegat and his family for ten years. Therefore their marriage lasted somewhere between 8 and 18 years.

Ragnar & Lagertha

This partnership is a fan favorite, and most hoped that one day these two would find a way back to each other. During their marriage, these two characters had a successful relationship that fans could root for.

While they both obviously continued to regard each other with respect and fondness, they never did get back together. Their only surviving child, Bjorn, was between ten and twelve when they separated, making it likely that they had been married for at least ten years.
