So with social isolation, someone mentioned playing VR games. Then it hit me... I wonder if there is a VR for practicing Salsa. So I took a look and found they all seem to be rather 101. Anyone else know about this. Seems interesting yet ODD. M

I would be quite happy with just a playstation/xbox game to practice my creativity and musicality Chris_Yannick

Staff member Tried it since I have VR at home. Not enough content yet. You need a fairly light headset for comfort which doesn't exist yet. VR is awesome. Just not for dancing. S

It's really cool for flight sim type stuff. First time I tried flying in VR, it was an unreal experience. I've also tried planetary observation but not much of it. The free stuff wasn't very impressive. I mostly play PC VR games, which is what VR was made for. At first, I read underwear stuff... A

That would be awesome as well. And they do have a VR section on some popular adult recreational activities website :D S

is it immersive VR experience you guys are talking about for flight sim? I haven't tried VR yet. Best for salsa would be an immersive VR experience in augmented reality with a remote connection to someone else sharing the same. No need to go to festivals or step out of the house :) S

I've never done VR but with being cooped indoors predicted for the next month, i figured to keep it more interesting. Chris_Yannick

Yes, the feeling of being in flight in a good VR flight sim is incredibly immersive.

If I could send myself to a festival in Augmented VR and dance with someone while I'm still in my house, that would be absolutely amazing. The dance would have to only consist of shines, or some kind of blue tooth dancing, but man that would be a hoot. O

I think we will get there in another 10-15 years. By immersive I don't mean shines, partner work too. The clinks would have to be worked out but the sensation and feeling of transmitting kinetics will be there. In the immersive augmented reality, it should be possible to dance partnerwork in the future. The challenge is to keep the VR gear light. Light gloves or a ring on fingers, anklets, Google glasses like easy to wear light frame, surround ultra high resolution very small cameras with integrated lidar for the depth perception mounted atop light tripods (portable) or installed in ceilings/stands like speakers and fast reliable wireless connectivity. Hardware is the easier part. You will need to buy software for dancing salsa, or kickboxing, etc. Last edited: Mar 28, 2020 Chris_Yannick

There are already full VR bodysuits that can give tactile feedback. For dancing, I think only gloves would be necessary for it to work. The technology is there. It just needs a bit of refinement. Add in some kind of 360 degree treadmill and you have something in a similar vein as Ready Player One. A

Currently a proper salsa game for VR is the most sought-after product for players and will, if ever released, become a game changer for the whole VR industry. That is, after the first immersive p*rn experience. A

In 2013 I bought the developer edition of the first Oculus Rift, because I wanted to check out the technology. I remember being impressed with it, but I could see the technology needed lots of work to get it consumer ready. So I hardly used it. A few years later, I bought the Gear VR to see how things had improvement. There was massive improvement, But ultimately, using a smart phone to power a VR experience was never going to fly. Some experiences were great, but there were so many annoyances. Just having to add and remove my mobile to the headset was a nuisance. The device would get hot after about 5 minutes, and streaming YouTube content was also rubbish. I also damaged my only compatible phone, so have never got round to building any apps. Now there is the latest generation. I haven't tried any of the new VR devices. I hear Facebook are going to be releasing Oculus Quest 2 soon. I hear great things about the headset. Maybe I will try one more time to get into this. I wonder if the current situation in the world, is going to accelerate the progress on VR. There is going to be greater focus by the tech community to build more interactive experiences, based on the experience of lock-down. Plus there are a lot developers looking for work right now, as well as CS students who have lost internships. Many might start their own companies. Most of the software to build VR/AR apps is free and open source, so it is easy for someone to get into. I wouldn't be surprised if we get another major tech startup in the next few years (that gets acquired by one of the big tech giants). There is also 5G on the horizon, which will allow apps to harness the Cloud making more content and processing power available. Chris_Yannick

I have the Rift S and it's not suitable for dancing. The headset is still too heavy but not uncomfortable. There is a cord running from the computer to the device. I have no doubt VR headsets will be pared down in the future to something resembling glasses with minimal weight and discomfort with much better resolution. To go a step further, maybe holo emitters will exist too and you won't have to wear anything on your head. This should occur around the same time wifi is strong enough to deliver high quality data transmission to any part of the world without any latency. Also, by then there should be affordable, full body haptic feedback that can simulate a wide range of environmental stimuli. When all 3 of these things are available, then VR dancing will not only be viable, but will be almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Last edited: May 9, 2020 Jag75

I'm also totally in VR flight simming - I play Aerofly FS 2 with a Vive headset and my fave is the helicopter - feels incredibly real and graphics are mind-blowing. As for dancing - hmmmmm not sure how it can work... Jag75

*TRUST ME* when I tell you that modern VR headsets coupled with good PCs are incredible and will blow your mind - and are far far better than Gear VR. With the Vive I get zero distortion and feel like I'm actually looking at an actual location that is perfectly in sync with my head movements.
