After 4 tyres have blistered and comments from the the brand owner of "curbing" and a near serious accident I wanted to change the brand. I went to put on Bridgestone tyres after checking Which? magazine. To my horror and surprise the new tyre installer showed me that I had 2 J6.5's and 2 7's size wheels. The latter should have had 205 size tyres on them but had 195's as per the others - scary and hence the possible blistering! Has anyone any thoughts on if my car should have the larger at the back etc. I had bought two additional wheels from the local Merc. dealer which may be the larger ones - hard to tell after 4 years. The Merc dealer has been useless in helping me to know what I should have and what is safe. The supension is not lowered. Any help on knowing if the smaller wheels (J6.5) with 195 tyres are safe on all 4 wheels or if I should use the larger (J7's) with 205's on the rear wheels would be really appreciated - thank you. But have a look here: http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/information/fitting_chart/mercedes-benz It details what wheels will fit your car. It does look like the wrong tyres have been fitted  but also that either rim looks OK for your car. Just decide which you want. I'm not sure how the 124 is set for having wider on the rear, it's not the norm for that model. jpskiller

Very many thanks for the reply. I have just checked the diameters of both the J7 and J6.5 wheels and they are the same at approximately 16 1/4 inches across. B

I wouldn't associate blistering with this The rolling radius of a 205/60 is similar to that of a 195/65 and both setups are used on W124s. But there are no apllications from the actory that mix the two sizes Nick Froome www.w124.co.uk R

I think many more recent MB's have a staggered set up as standard - my C270 Avantgarde has 7J fronts and 8J rears. The tyres are sized to give the same (near as dammit) rolling circumference - 205/55R16 on front and 225/50R16 on rear. There's a tyre size comparator here: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html B

With later cars it would be to avoid upsetting the ESP, 4WD, etc, etc, etc Trivia: late Porsche 928s used the ABS sensors to drive a tyre low-pressure warning system. If one wheel rotated faster than the others that tyre would be flagged as being low pressure Nick Froome www.w124.co.uk Last edited: Sep 2, 2007 R

That feature can be enabled on facelifted W203's by someone with Star Diagnose and the right permissions. You must log in or register to reply here.
