Iris Phillips Profile Iris Phillips answered The condensed structural formula for methanol is CH3-OH, while that of salicylic acid is C6H4(OH)COOH. The combination of the two components results in what is the condensed structural formula and name of ester for methanol and salicylic acid, namely C6H4(OH)COOCH3, or C8H8O3, Methyl salicylate.
  • Methyl Salicylate
Oil of Wintergreen, as Methyl salicylate is more commonly known, is produced by creating an ester of salicylic acid and methyl alcohol, or methanol. While it is mostly synthesized for commercial use today, the ester was formerly distilled from twigs of the Eastern Teaberry, Gaultheria procumbens, or the Sweet Birch, Betula lenta.
  • Uses of Methyl Salicylate
The ester is used in deep heat liniments as a rubefacient, a substance meant for topical application, causing increased blood circulation and dilation of capillaries, resulting in redness of the skin. It has been known to cause both kidney and stomach problems if applied in large quantities. It is also used as a flavoring, although only in tiny amounts not exceeding 0.04%, due to its toxicity; this includes its use in some chewing gums and candies as an alternative to peppermint or spearmint.Another use is that as a fragrance for a variety of products, and to mask odors in various organophosphate pesticides.Male orchid bees are apparently attracted to and gather this chemical to synthesize important pheromones. It is therefore used widely as bait to collect this type of bees for studies. In immunohistochemistry and microscopy, Methyl salicylate can be used to clear animal or plant tissue specimens of color, which is particularly useful if excess color pigments block light or obscure structures within the examined tissue. The clearing process generally takes little more than a few minutes, although the tissue has to be dehydrated in alcohol before clearing can commence.
