Community Links Social Groups Pictures & Albums Members Search Forums Show Threads Show Posts Tag Search Advanced Search Go to Page... whats normal compression on a vq35? buying a used engine Reply Subscribe Thread Tools Search this Thread Jan 7, 2015 | 11:55 PM Share Share Options #1 carsnwomen91 Thread Starter Senior Member Joined: Jun 2011 Posts: 1,222 From: Mississauga, ON, CANADA whats normal compression on a vq35? buying a used engine i was browsing car-part and i believe i found a contender for a swap. the notes in the listing read as follows 2003 maxima OIL 74-20,50@2000,COMP 200-220 77k miles/124k km for $1000CAD + taxes -i called and found out a few things but i forgot what the 'oil 74-20' meant... something to do with oil pressure cold idle vs hot (i'll call back and check). -50@2000 means 50psi oil pressure at 2000rpm -and 200-220 compression reading (dry) i was really happy to see such a high compression reading over the others, is this normal? i figured high compression reading = good ring seal = no to very little oil burning so what do you guys think of those numbers, this a good buy? whats the stock healthy compression reading? You have oil control rings, and compression rings. Get one from a newer altima or maxima (08+) and be done. Zero oil consumption since I swapped the HR version in. Zero oil consumption since I swapped the HR version in. i read your 08 altima motor swap thread and thats too involved for what kind of resources i have. i mean my car is going into a garage and my buddy can do a thing here or there but it has to be mostly a direct swap cause i need to get it running A1 asap and be out of the garage. as i was reading your thread on page 3 supra11 tried to jack your thread with 07 maxima motor swap lol thats what i want to do since SurraTT mentioned right after that, that only a few components need a swap, is this true? It's easy swap without too many complications https://maxima.org/forums/5th-genera...o-5-5-gen.html https://maxima.org/forums/5th-genera...me-engine.html ok i've read the first thread lots of good info to swapping an 04-06 engine. what i've learned is: -swap the fuel rail for same connectors -swap the IM because 02-03 has no egr (if the 02-03 egr is internal wouldn't a newer engine essentially delete it?? i don't get this) -swap the knock sensor to 02-03 and re-use 02-03 harness -swap the CPS when going from auto to manual (how do you know where to mount it on the manual??) -swap upper oil pan to manual when using auto engine thats for 04-06 but i'd really like an 07-08 max vq35de. oil consumption is still reported by some (not as bad) but i'd like to avoid it as much as possible if i can with a newer vq with as little work as possible. is there more to swap on 07-08? did they have a plastic intake manifold? cvt to manual swap differences? i need to know as much definitive info as i can, i can't be figuring stuff out on the fly because i'm not doing a swap and i need to tell my friend all the info necessary to not take up the hoist for more than i plan. 04-06 is 6g 07-08 is 6.5g just like 00-01 is 5g and 02-03 is 5.5. its the same car but refreshed, hence the .5g Last edited by carsnwomen91; Jan 11, 2015 at 12:18 PM. No the guide has some wrongs... But 07-08 is even more bolt on than 04-06. The cps is in the same place and the oil pans remain the same, so just jus the knock sensor and injector clips are different and maybe a 1-2 other clips but easy. You may still have to replace the timing chain tensioners before you drop it in, those years still had some issues. By the time you replace that crap (pain in the ***), you might as well just use a 7th gen engine or the 07+ altima/09+ quest, etc. It's much easier to solder some wires and cut a little aluminum off than disassembling the entire timing system.
