#4 · Feb 7, 2010 Re: whirring/fan noise after shut down (mememdez589) To be precise, it is called "auxiliary engine coolant pump" or "after-run pump" by VW. The actual fan is much more noisier than this fellow. This little auxiliary pump kicks in as soon as the ignition is turned off and stays on for about 10 mins, not only after hard driving. I think the coolant temp is the deciding factor. Modified by z4313 at 12:28 PM 2-7-2010 #5 · Feb 7, 2010 but after 10 minutes the temperature is still 190 degrees. What is the point of this pump? I could see the point of it running for 3-4 hours until the engine is completely cool but 10 minutes seems to do nothing at all. And does it not come on in certain cases? I couldn't hear it today, then again it is not as quiet during the day as it is during the late hours where I noticed it yesterday... As we all know, the turbo temp can be much higher than that of the engine block. Therefore, I think the purpose is to shave off the turbo temp and equalize it to engine block temp. All in all, it is a good thing to have to help minimize the chances of hot spots anywhere in the engine, turbo or not, after the engine operation stops. Perhaps VW engineers thought along these lines?
Meanwhile let me try to find a 2.5 diagram. It might shed a light....... Edit: 2.5 diagram that I have is not very clear but it does show the after-run coolant pump just circulating coolant through the engine block. Did my daily commute and waited by the grille for a few minutes to see if anything happened. Nothing today. Probably not a cooling system function at the temperatures it occurs, maybe something to do with the A/C? #11 · Feb 8, 2010 It is the coolant recirculation pump. Even my old 2000 Passat V6 had it.
