newg37 N Hi, I have a 2006 2.5L jetta and for the first time ever I noticed after shutdown a fan sound coming out of the grille minutes after the car was shut off and locked. It's a quiet evening so I was able to notice it as I walked past the front to leave and then leaned down to hear it coming from the front of the VW logo on the grille. Once I go to the side of the car I can't hear it. I googled it and found a bunch of people saying it's to cool off the turbo but I don't have a turbo. Where can I find out what this is? It would seem logical that it's a fan cooling off the car after shutdown but it's 60 degrees outside why does it need help cooling down? I can't believe I didn't notice this before. I wash my car frequently and would have noticed something like what appears to be the type of sound a computer fan makes. #1 · Feb 7, 2010 Hi, I have a 2006 2.5L jetta and for the first time ever I noticed after shutdown a fan sound coming out of the grille minutes after the car was shut off and locked. In my case, it is the cooling fan, nothing to do with turbo. My MK4 VR6 used to have it too. The fan keeps on running for some time after you shut off the engine. I think it is a function of radiator temp, not the outside temp. This means if outside is cooler then the fan will probably turn off sooner. I am guessing your Jetta 2.5 has the same situation. Modified by z4313 at 1:31 AM 2-7-2010 #3 · Feb 7, 2010 Re: whirring/fan noise after shut down (z4313) mkvs do have a coolant pump that runs after you turned off the car after driving hard...but its called a fan Image #4 · Feb 7, 2010 Re: whirring/fan noise after shut down (mememdez589) To be precise, it is called "auxiliary engine coolant pump" or "after-run pump" by VW. The actual fan is much more noisier than this fellow. This little auxiliary pump kicks in as soon as the ignition is turned off and stays on for about 10 mins, not only after hard driving. I think the coolant temp is the deciding factor. Modified by z4313 at 12:28 PM 2-7-2010 #5 · Feb 7, 2010 but after 10 minutes the temperature is still 190 degrees. What is the point of this pump? I could see the point of it running for 3-4 hours until the engine is completely cool but 10 minutes seems to do nothing at all. And does it not come on in certain cases? I couldn't hear it today, then again it is not as quiet during the day as it is during the late hours where I noticed it yesterday... Modified by newg37 at 12:33 PM 2-7-2010 #6 · Feb 7, 2010 Re: (newg37) I just checked the cooling diagram. This after-run pump seems to circulate coolant around the turbo. As we all know, the turbo temp can be much higher than that of the engine block. Therefore, I think the purpose is to shave off the turbo temp and equalize it to engine block temp. They don't let the turbo sit with a higher temp after engine shut off, which makes sense. 10 mins should be enough for this. #7 · Feb 7, 2010 Re: (z4313) yes that makes perfect sense but what about guys like me who don't have turbos just regular 2.5Ls? #8 · Feb 7, 2010 Re: (newg37) I see your point. All in all, it is a good thing to have to help minimize the chances of hot spots anywhere in the engine, turbo or not, after the engine operation stops. Perhaps VW engineers thought along these lines? Image Meanwhile let me try to find a 2.5 diagram. It might shed a light....... Edit: 2.5 diagram that I have is not very clear but it does show the after-run coolant pump just circulating coolant through the engine block. Modified by z4313 at 2:55 PM 2-7-2010 #9 · Feb 8, 2010 I've been trying to replicate the pump sound all day. Did my daily commute and waited by the grille for a few minutes to see if anything happened. Nothing today. Now I'm just confused lol. #10 · Feb 8, 2010 Re: whirring/fan noise after shut down (newg37) My 2.5 has done this since new, it happens infrequently and usually at cooler temperatures. Probably not a cooling system function at the temperatures it occurs, maybe something to do with the A/C? #11 · Feb 8, 2010 It is the coolant recirculation pump. Even my old 2000 Passat V6 had it. Same thing in my GTI. I haven't noticed this in my R32 though. Insert Quotes Post Reply
