Etymology

xin (“to beg”) +‎ lỗi (“mistake”).

The literal meaning of these two words is "to beg for someone's mistake", which some people might consider strange. It's possibly a shortened form of the more outdated literary form xin thứ lỗi/xin tha lỗi.

Usage notes

• For the English phrase I'm sorry (about your loss / about this inconvenience / what you've been through), translators may use rất tiếc / tiếc quá (“that's a pity”) or xin chia buồn với... (“my condolences to...”).
  • Rất tiếc, chúng tôi hết phòng đôi rồi ạ.I'm sorry, we have run out of twin rooms.
• To ask for pardon and understanding in more mild contexts, xin bỏ qua (“forgive”) or xin thông cảm (“sympathize”) may be used instead.
  • Nếu video có gì sai sót mong quý khán thính giả bỏ qua.If there are any errors in this video, I hope the audience will forgive.
  • Xin thông cảm mình đã trễ vì sáng nay bị kẹt xe.Please be understanding for having been late because of traffic this morning.
