Microsoft-MediaCorp content website Xinmsn has effectively shut down on April 1, 2015, according to a report by Popspoken that doesn't look like an April Fools' joke.
Microsoft will now operate MSN Singapore individually as msn.com.sg, with their content teams staying with the technology company will aggregate news items from local and international publishers.
Content teams working under MediaCorp will be part of the revamped Toggle site, which relaunches today.
As part of the relaunch, users are now able to watch dramas on Toggle from local free-to-air channels such as Channel 5 and Channel U without logging in.
However, users are still required to log in to access content on exclusive service Toggle-It-First.
This news is abrupt considering that Microsoft and MediaCorp announced in October 2014 the launch of the revamped Xinmsn in Singapore, following the official roll-out of the new MSN in over 50 countries last year.
According to one reply to comments on the old xinmsn.com Facebook page that can be read as an explanation for Xinmsn's closure, it was written:
“As content consumption trends continue to evolve with the increasing use of digital technologies, there is a need to relook at content strategies to cater to the ever-changing needs of consumers.”
“MediaCorp and Microsoft, joint owners of xinmsn, have reviewed the operations and believe that they can better serve audiences as two separate entities, i.e. toggle.sg and msn.com.sg.”
