XT3 Vs XH1 (again): Fujifilm X System / SLR Talk Forum

So I recently I've been kinda into the fuji X system and I now want to buy a camera that best suits me. I will buy a xf 16 55 with both of these cameras and my need is casual photography and sometimes portraits and I rarely do videos. There had been forums discussing about this comparasion but the newest one I can find is from a year ago and I'm sure that there has been a lot of firmware updates for the xh1 that should have improved it quite alot. I'm sure that the xt3 is much better in AF speed and maybe accuracy but did the updates improve the xh1's af to the point that it is snappy in normal uses? How do you guys compare the current xh1's af performance to older sony cameras like the a7rii? Is the lack of any kind of IS bad since the 16 55 will be my only lens for a few years. Any opinions are much appreciated. Thanks!

As you can see, there have not been any improvements to the AF speed or tracking capabilities. There was one update that changed how the AF area settings work and allows phase detect AF for the smallest area mode. The X-H1’s AF capabilities were likely already maxed out when they first released the camera.
The main updates to the X-H1 have involved improvements to the IBIS system. To me, the main advantages of the X-H1 over the X-T3 are: IBIS, grip/handling with larger lenses, stronger lens mount, tougher body coating, quieter shutter and smoother shutter release, and better buttons (for example, the AF-ON button size and location). Almost all of these advantages (other than the grip) are being carried into the X-T line with the X-T4. The X-H1 is a great camera and based on the shooting types you specified it should do everything you need. The main advantage you’d get with the X-T3 is improved AF tracking and eye detection AF. The eye detection is basically unusable on the X-H1.
For most uses (other than wildlife and sports), the X-H1’s AF is fast and accurate. There have been some reports of the camera creating out of focus images when used with the 16-55, but I just recently got that lens and haven’t used them enough together to say one way or the other if this is an issue for me.

There hasn’t been a recent firmware upgrade for the X-H1 and I don’t expect any more. The AF is fine for me, but it can’t compete with the new sensor or processor of the X-T3.
Unless you go X-T4 (when available), you’ll have to choose between snappier AF or IBIS. I chose IBIS and I’m glad I did. I can get sharp shots with my 16mm at 1/15 second. For video, IBIS really helps, but not as much as a gimbal.

I shoot with the X-H1 & 16-55, and the odd prime now and again. Personally, I'd never trade IBIS for an incremental improvement in AF. I find the AF speed of the X-H1 more than adequate - I almost never even think about it. But then, I do not shoot fast moving subjects very often - particularly in low-light. OTOH, I do shoot blue-hour landscapes and (when I can) cityscapes a lot, and IBIS is crucial there. YMMV.

The eye AF with the X-Trans III cameras (X-H1, X-T2 etc.) is pretty much worthless for anything important. Otherwise, the AF is quick, accurate, and more than adequate for almost anything.

Personally, I prefer the 24MP sensor of the X-H1 to the faster, but not better sensor IQ of the X-T3 (for stills, anyway), and the 16-55 is several orders of magnitude better for my purposes than the 18-55 - so it’s a no-brainer, in my opinion.

That is a superb combo and, along with the 100-400, the 16-55 spends an awful lot of time on my X-H1. Seeing your post reminded me of our little field trip to the Japanese Gardens a while back where we took my X-H1 out for a little test run. IIRC, we were hand holding .5s exposures of the waterfall there and realized nearly a 50% keeper rate. IMHO — for a first generation implementation, IBIS on that body is pretty amazing. I’ve been able to hand hold dark interior shots of cathedrals as well, with no additional support required, and have been able to maintain a very high (80%+) keeper rate at moderate ISOs. For a first gen implementation, I think Fuji did a pretty credible job.

I was a fan of IBIS too..... but:
- If your subject is moving, it gives you a false feeling of comfort, when it is practically useless;
- For still subjects, it is rare that you cannot use a tripod. Tripods are incredible these days, cheap, light, practical
- Ibis is often decreasing the sharpness when the shutter speed is high. To turn it on/off can be a pain when frequently necessary.
- I worry about the long term issues that can arise due to IBIS. Decentering, or non-orthogonal sensor after a few years?

The A7RII is dog slow in pretty much all cameras operations. But one thing that is good is the auto focus. Definitely better than XTransIII cameras and perhaps on par (or better in situations) than XT3.
A7RIII and A7III (a6300, a6500, a6400, a6600 too) are better than XT3 generation of auto focus. When it comes to capturing anything that moves with the Sony you can pretty much expect the focus to hit. With Fuji you are always left wondering if you got the shot and in many cases you will not get the shot.
For static subjects both are just fine.

I'd suggest the 16-80 over the 18-55 if you want a lens with OIS. The 16-80 is reportedly as sharp or sharper than the 18-55 in the overlapping focal length ranges, has better OIS, focus speed, and has weather sealing. Not to mention the larger focal length range.

But it is not at all night and day even for BIF photography. You get say 30% more tack sharp keepers at best in fast action photography. I also find the XH1 to have a better built and a better finish, more pro (the T3 being superb but still behind)
The big asset of the XH1 is both IBIS and super soft shutter release (some hate that ..)
I use both bith their batt grip

I was a fan of IBIS too..... but:
- If your subject is moving, it gives you a false feeling of comfort, when it is practically useless;
That’s can certainly happen unless you remain self aware and are used to compensating for movement with increased shutter speed as a matter of habit. After a while, it becomes something you rarely even have to think about.
- For still subjects, it is rare that you cannot use a tripod. Tripods are incredible these days, cheap, light, practical
That’s VERY dependent on what and where you shoot. I still use my tripod a lot, but there are plenty of situations where it’s not practical — or in some cases, even possible. In some (but not necessarily all) of those situations, it can be a real game changer and an enabling technology.
- Ibis is often decreasing the sharpness when the shutter speed is high. To turn it on/off can be a pain when frequently necessary.
I’ve heard that as well, however, it’s not something I’ve yet encountered. Maybe I’m just fortunate. I generally only check my shutter speed to ensure that its appropriate for lighting, subject movement, etc. I’ve yet to avoid a higher shutter speed unless the situation and subject matter calls for it.
- I worry about the long term issues that can arise due to IBIS. Decentering, or non-orthogonal sensor after a few years?
The technology has been around for a good while and its adoption by various vendors is increasing, not decreasing. I’ve had my X-H1 since the day it became available. My usage has been fairly heavy (it’s my only body) and none of the issues you list has showed up yet. I’m only a single case here, so that’s not to say they might not eventually happen, but if you’ve seen write ups about those potential issues, you might consider sharing them here. I’ve yet to read anything where those potential issues have been highlighted.

Look, hardly anybody has a job right now, who knows for how long, so expect some really good sales by thanks giving.
The XH1 will again drop in price this year when the T4 gets to the shelves. If you buy used and shop around and negotiate in Craigslist you should be able to buy it at least at that same $999 WITH the grip and since a lot of us are not receiving any income at the moment if you get lucky you might get it for less. That will be the “better” buy.
Having said that, a lot of XH1 bodies out there have the freezing issue (mine had it) so just keep that in mind. Simple fix by just removing the battery. Fuji never improved the AF and the newer cameras definitely have better AF. The XH1 doesn’t have bad AF but is okay. The XH1 also sucks a lot of power specially depending on how you use it/set it up.Since you only want to shoot “casual” I say get the 18-55 which is a really nice and compact lens. Is like $300 used 👌
Competition is INSANE so if you wait about a year after the T4 comes out you will get a really good deal on it as well. Meanwhile I suggest to get a less expensive camera and there are plenty out there.
