25 Free Moss Stitch Crochet Patterns - Ned & Mimi

From hats and scarves to blankets and garments, this list of moss stitch crochet patterns has something for everyone!

The moss stitch (also know as the linen, seed or granite stitch) is so easy to learn, and absolutely perfect for beginners. If you can work a chain and a single crochet, then you can crochet this stitch – easy peasy!

This stitch pattern creates a classic “woven” look fabric, and it is possible to achieve a variety of textures and fabrics simply by varying the hook size that you use, or changing up your colours.

How to Crochet the Moss Stitch

The moss stitch pattern is an absolutely perfect crochet stitch for beginners. You will need to know how to work a chain and a single crochet – that’s it!

To start the stitch pattern, chain any even number, then work the first row by alternating single crochet and chain stitches. The first row always ends on a single crochet.

For the second row, you simply start with a single crochet, and then work a row of alternating single crochets/chains again, working each single crochet into the chain space from the previous row.

Repeat these two rows for as long as you want 🙂

A Versatile Crochet Stitch

One of my favourite things about this moss stitch is it’s versatility.

For a tightly woven fabric (for a bag or purse for example), you can use a smaller crochet hook.

For a looser fabric with a great drape (perhaps for a shawl or garment), you can use a larger hook size.

This stitch looks great worked in a single colour, or you can alternate colours every second row for a unique “vertical stripe” effect.

And finally, you can work the moss stitch flat or in the round, and it looks great both ways!

Moss Stitch Shawl by Sarah @ Repeat Crafter Me

"And with just one ball I created a triangle shawl! I used the Moss Stitch (SC + Chain 1) which is such a simple beautiful stitch. Unlike a traditional SC where you can see a defined front and back of the stitch, the moss stitch allows for perfect little “v’s” on both sides which makes your project completely reversible. Plus the self-striping nature of Caron Big Cakes lends itself so well to this stitch and project!" - Sarah @ Repeat Crafter Me
