One of the things I love most about crochet is the endless stitch options. Finding a great stitch combination can be so amazing when designing. When I first came across the even Moss Stitch I knew it had the perfect texture and it was just what I was looking for when designing The Rowan Scarf.

Today I want to share with you a detailed tutorial on how to do the even moss stitch. For this demonstration I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick which is a bulky weight 6 yarn and a size N (10mm) crochet hook. The even moss stitch can be used in any weight yarn. The even moss stitch uses a combination of two basic crochet stitches, the slip stitch and the half double crochet.

For the even moss stitch you will need to start with an odd number of chains. For this example I chained 11.

Then working into the second chain from the hook, work a slip stitch (sl st).

Work a half double crochet (hdc) into the next chain (ch).

Continue across the row working one sl st and then one hdc until the end.

When you reach the end of the row, ch 1 and turn. Now working just as before sl st into the first st and then hdc into the next.

You will notice that you are slip stitching into each hdc from the previous row and working a hdc into each sl st from the previous row. You can easily recognize the hdc stitches by locating the “third loop” that was created.
