UK, English Hello all, When people say 'buenas' for 'buenas tardes', for example, is it more informal? What would be a good translation:- - hello - greetings (v formal in English) - hi - ' afternoon - ' evening Thanks! B

FILIPINO hi.. "buenas alone literally means Good from term "bueno". but if you tell someone 'BUenas" meaning changes to something like "hello"or hola.but when u say Buenas tardes, bueonos dias, that would also mean good afternoon and good mornning.I dont really know how that rule came about but that's what I notice to some of my spanish friends. Barcelona, Spain English, French - Canada Hi, I just wanted to add that "buenas" has become of common use at any time of day here in Spain. Most of my colleagues walk in to the office saying Buenas at 9 in the morning. :) So I'd say Hello is a good equivalent. Fantasmagórico

Montevideo, Uruguay Uruguayan Spanish We say “buenas” all throughout the day, not only in the afternoon. And yes, it is very informal. This greeting is commonly associated with countryside people, at least in my country. A common variation is: “¡buenas y santas!”; when urban people say this, they do it mimicking the rural accent. W

FILIPINO oh I see..I think that's how Spanish and latin america and castillan languages varies.because I know some madrileno and they use the term "buenas" as much as they use "Hola".I think that varies from the culture that they come from. D

Valladolid (España) Castellano (Español) "Buenas" is fairly informal and is widely used here. Some variations are: Hola, buenas. Muy buenas. There is a typical Spanish joke about this: Un hombre entra en una zapatería y dice: - ¿Tienen zapatillas? - Muy buenas. - Muy buenas... ¿Tienen zapatillas? :D PD, si alguien no lo entiende y necesita traducción, que me la pida. ;) R
