Great Shinobi Owl (大忍び 梟, Great Shinobi Owl, Daishinobi Fukurō)is a Boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. This Complete Great Shinobi Owl Boss Guide gives you strategies on how to beat Owl easily, as well as tips, tricks and lore notes. Bosses like Great Shinobi Owl are special, dangerous Enemies that feature a special display on-screen when defeated, such as "Immortality Severed" or "Shinobi Execution". You will need to perform multiple Deathblows on them in order to defeat them, and filling their Posture Gauge is the only way to accomplish this. However, decreasing their health will make it so their Posture Gauge depletes much quicker, assisting you in accomplishing this feat.

Sekiro Great Shinobi Owl Strategy Writeup
NOTE: This boss is capable of using a powerful Mikiri Counter which deals massive (often fatal) damage. As such, it is advised not to use thrust attacks unless Owl is open to counterattacks. Unlike his Hirata counter part however, Shadow Rush will not trigger his mikiri counter.
In phase 1 you want to bait him into doing 3 things. First is the 2x shuriken throw and overhead jump attack. When he does this you want to dodge or deflect the shurikens and front-diagonally sidestep the jump slam and then counterattack, or Mortal Draw 2 times. Running directly behind Owl will allow you to make an extra attack before he is able to block again. Be wary, though: Owl also has an attack where he quickly throws a single shuriken, followed by a devastating sweep that deals high posture damage. Be sure not to confuse the two, don't try to sidestep after the first shuriken if you aren't sure!
Second, you want to hit him when he tries to hit you with the green cloud that prevents you from healing and buffing. Sidestep and then strike, but make sure you don't get debuffed. You want him to keep doing this maneuver, and he will cease to do so if you get affected. However, the Divine Child of Rejuvenation's Rice is not prevented.
Lastly, you want to bait him into attacking with a two hit attack that starts from his right and then the second will be back to his left. You want to deflect the first strike and then dodge through the second and then punish him. Do not attempt this if the attack begins on his left, as it is much harder to dodge through this combo. When phase 1 is finished, Owl's health bar will disappear and he will kneel down, begging for mercy. This is a trick, so do not fall for it and resume attacking Owl to begin the second phase.
In phase 2 you want to do the same things, only you need to run away when he does the smoke. If you are not debuffed then he will usually try to debuff you here, which is easy to dodge. If you are debuffed, however, you will have to dodge a much stronger attack.
Alternate strategy: Owl is, like Wolf, without super armor on his special moves. It is possible to use a normal sword swing to knock him out of his jumps, shuriken throw, anti-healing bomb and gunpowder throws. Attacking twice so that the second attack produces the deeper sound (enemy deflects you), then parry one sword swing from him, then repeat. If he attempts a non-sword move he usually will be interrupted by your attack. It's quite possible to literally push him in a corner and pressure him to death in both phases. This works especially well since he will still try to dash back away from you occasionally, which results in him essentially jumping in place because he's against a wall, giving you some free hits. When your posture is low, back off quickly and block a short while to recharge, then go back in. You may find this much easier than handling his large repertoire of moves when he is given space.
If you defeat the boss you will see the writing "SHINOBI EXECUTION" upon the screen.
Sekiro Great Shinobi Owl Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Counter |
| Phase 1 | |
| Shinobi Charm | Owl tosses a charm into the air that releases a green mist upon touching the ground. This attack does not damage the player, however, but if the player contacts the mist they will be unable to use healing items (Healing Gourd, Pellets, etc. EXCEPT Rice) for 30 seconds. This is often used to end combos performed by the Owl, or after he does a Smoke Screen. |
| Backflip | He leaps off of you and throws a shuriken in your direction. Deflect/dodge the kick and shuriken. |
| Running Slash | Owl runs towards you and performs a single strong slash, knocking you back if blocked. Dodge or Deflect, depending on your Posture. |
| 4-slash Combo | Owl performs 4 consecutive slashes with his sword. This attack is often followed by a Shinobi Charm. Deflect them or run away. |
| Shuriken Throw & Flip | Owl will throw 2 shuriken then flip towards you in the air and then perform a single downward strike with his sword. Counter this by sidestepping the first shuriken, deflecting the second to be safe, and diagonally frontdodging the flipstrike opening up a great opportunity to attack 3-4 times, or better, Mortal Draw 2 times. |
| Shuriken Slash | Owl throws a shuriken at the player immediately followed by a running slash. Similar to the Chasing Slice Shinobi Martial Art. Sidestep the shuriken and deflect(will deal some posture damage to you+knock you back) or run away for a Firecracker or a shuriken of your own. |
| Firecracker | Sometimes he will throw black gunpowder that explodes like the Shinobi Firecracker and does damage. Run away when you see black smoke or run/dodge in if you are daring. |
| Stomp (grab) | Owl will raise his foot into the air then stomp down, pinning the player to the ground and stabbing them through the chest. This attack does massive damage and cannot be blocked and DOES NOT have a Perilous indicator. |
| Phase 2 | |
| Backflip | Same as in phase one but he throws poison. Dodge and keep away from the area and keep some antidote on hand. |
| Shinobi Charm | Same as phase one. |
Great Shinobi Owl Lore
Dying whatsoever to him in combat makes him recite the Iron Code to you: "One! The parent is absolute. Their will must be obeyed. ...Yet I'm sensing some insubordination." "Two! The master is absolute. You give your life to keep him safe. You bring him back at any cost. ...At this rate, you'll lose him again" "Three! Fear is absolute. There is no shame in losing one battle. But you must take revenge by any means necessary! ...I wonder if you've got it in you - to bring me down."
For other lore not directly related to this boss fight, see the Owl.
Great Shinobi Owl Notes & Trivia
If you attack with a thrust attack or a charged attack from the Loaded Spear prosthetic tool, Owl will Mikiri Counter it and perform a deathblow on Wolf.
You cannot apply a weapon buff such as Divine Confetti or Bestowal Ninjutsu (Candies/spiritfalls still work) prior to the fight as Sekiro will automatically sheath his sword when approaching Owl to initiate dialogue. You can however apply buff right in the border of the arena on the outside of the railings.
