Having the right tools for the job can make or break your Minecraft experience. The game has several tools and weapons to choose from, so players can use specialised tools for each task.

Wood is possibly one of the first items you’ll mine when you spawn in a new Minecraft world. Wooden tools will also allow you to mine more and mine faster, eventually until you start using stone or higher-level tools.

In this article, we’re taking a look at how to make an axe in Minecraft.

Axes in Minecraft

Minecraft axes are a replica of their real-life counterparts. You use them to chop off trees. However, axes made from better elements such as stone, iron and gold, among others, are faster at mining wood and have more durability. 

Since tools like these can only be used several times before they break, the choice of the element is essential when crafting a tool. Keep in mind that there are ores that require a certain level of tool to mine. 

Crafting axes in Minecraft

You can build your axe from any following materials, ranked from weakest to strongest.

• Gold: requires three gold ingots.
• Wood: requires three oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, crimson, or warped planks.
• Stone: requires three cobblestone or three blackstone blocks.
• Iron: requires three iron ingots.
• Diamond: requires three diamonds.
• Netherite: requires three netherite ingots.

Apart from having at least one of the items mentioned above, you also need two sticks to craft an axe. Additionally, since crafting axes requires a 3 x 3 crafting grid, you’re going to need a crafting table as well.

Step 1: Walk up to your crafting table and right-click to interact.

Step 2: Place your axe element and sticks in the exact pattern below. In this example, we’re using wood planks to make a wood axe, but you can swap out the plans for any elements mentioned above. As long as the pattern is the same, you should get the corresponding axe.

Now go out and get that wood. Once again, keep in mind that tools like axes only have certain durability and break after continued use, so it might be a good idea to craft a few (they aren’t stackable) and keep them with you. You can enchant your axe to get additional benefits.
