The term el hogar is used in Spanish to mean “home” but because of how English is, some people are tempted to use el hogar when Spanish would use la casa.

First, el hogar is more literally “hearth” because hogar is related to el fuego “fire”. Spanish H/F is historically iffy, where in older Spanish it was el fogar which meant “the place that holds fire”. In that sense hogar was related to “fireplace”.

In general, el hogar has more of a symbolic meaning of belonging than la casa, where el hogar can mean “home” or “abode”, as well as sometimes the actual house. By symbolic I mean you can say a country is your hogar or an apartment; it’s not really the structure that’s important, but the feeling of belonging and the importance of it. But el hogar can be used for “house”, probably closer to “residence” in some ways.

With la casa the etymology is a little unclear. One source says that it comes from Hebrew and that it meant “thatching” or “weaving” since older houses were done with branches. But la casa is generally more of a physical object.

The main difference between the two is that la casa is used more idiomatically than el hogar. With la casa you see it as a casa or en casa idiomatically:

llegar a casa = to arrive home

llevar (a alguien) a casa = to take (someone) home

quedar(se) en casa = to stay home

estar en casa = to be at home / to be indoors/inside

ir a casa = to go home

ir a casa (de alguien) = to go to (someone’s) house

bienvenido/a a casa = welcome home

Saying ir al hogar de ___ sounds less like a physical object and more symbolic, or a representational thing like “household” or “native land” in a sense.

Note: As adjectives hogareño/a and casero/a meaning “household” or “domestic” or “related to the house” like tareas hogareñas/caseras “household chores” are more or less interchangeable.
