POWER’s show boss has explained why Joe Proctor’s prequel series was axed in a major nod to Breaking Bad.
Jerry Ferrara played the shady attorney in the Starz series and, much like Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul, Power creator Courtney Kemp initially wanted to explore Joe’s history of dodgy dealings.

Speaking to TV Line, she said: “A long time ago, I wanted to do a Better Call Saul with Proctor.
“I thought that would have been an awesome show, but Jerry and I are working on something else.”
The final season of Power saw Joe killed by Tommy Egan after he discovered he had revealed him to be Angela Valdes’ killer.
Speaking about his character’s brutal death and his first reaction to it, Jerry said: “My whole thought had been, ‘When it comes for me, I’m going to take it like a soldier. I’m not going to show that I’m upset.’

“And I got upset in the room! I was like, ‘Aw man, why now? It couldn’t be three more episodes?’
“But I’m sure those are tough conversations for [Courtney].”
While Joe’s prequel was axed, there are still four Power spin-offs in the works.
Power Book II: Ghost, which stars Mary J. Blige, picks up days after the events of the Power series finale.

Starz has also greenlit three more spin-off series centring around characters from the original show.
One is called Power Book III: Raising Kanan and is a prequel to Power set in the 1990s.
It will chronicle the early years of Kanan Stark, played in Power by executive producer Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson.

Meanwhile Power Book IV: Influence will focus on Rashad Tate, the dodgy politician played by Larenz Tate in the original show.
The third spin-off will be Power Book V: Force, which will follow Tommy (played by Joseph Sikora) as he “cuts ties and puts New York in his rearview mirror for good”.
