gandgracing Had a bolt come loose behind the power steering pump pulley so I had to pull it off. As soon as I got it all back together the belt squeaked for a couple minutes then quit. A few days later I heard it again and now the belt is coming apart on the front edge. So how far do you put the pulley on? Also is there a bolt that holds the pulley on? #1 · Jul 23, 2008 Had a bolt come loose behind the power steering pump pulley so I had to pull it off. GM had a bulletin about this a few years ago due to belt squeaking but I don't remember the specific positioning. Either way, if you went in all the way you went too far. #5 · Jul 24, 2008 flush with the shaft and theres no bolt that holds the pulley on.if your pulley is correct its possible you installed the belt one rib off so it tore the belt up after driving its not that hard to do i mean having it one rib off. #6 · Aug 4, 2008 Lost my belt tonight on the way out to eat with friends, went to put it back on as it torn on rib off the belt and noticed the alignment of the power steering pump out of wack. decided to start the truck to see if it would get me home Belt jumped back off within 30second and wrapped around power steering pump pulley and now pull is out of wack and bent. Can I replace just the pulley? anyone else have the problem? #7 · Aug 4, 2008 yes you should be able to just replace the pulleyas long as the p.s. pump shaft is in good shape. #8 · Sep 16, 2008 What a PIA, belt come off again with new pulley installed, had pressed it on, shaft straight, looks like its about 1/8 from being flush, might have to take it back off and press it flush. I thought it was flush when I put it back but not sure that I paid that much attention. #9 · Sep 5, 2011 i had an issue of my pulley slipping out off the shaft (almost all the way to the radiator shroud). Put the bolt in the end of the shaft, pressed it back into place and havent had any issues since. Now for the million dollar question, why in the hell, since there is a threaded hole in the end of the shaft im presuming specifically to use for pressing the pully back on, didnt they just leave that bolt there and avoid having this happen in the first place? Thats exactly what i did once i got it back into place, i placed a bolt/washer in there with blue locktite to keep the pully from slipping back off again and almost leaving me stranded out in the middle of nowhere. This happened on a Saturday close to B'ham, ALA, and what was really bad was out of 6 different autoparts stors around, NONE of them had the correct belt for my truck. I got extremely lucky that ONE of the 3 Chevy dealerships in B'ham was actually open on Sat. afternoon and had a belt in stock, otherwise i would have been screwed out of town till that Monday. #10 · Sep 5, 2011 TClark, I had the same issue, after re-installing the pulley with the bolt, the steering pump finally siezed up causing the pulley to just spin on the shaft[hardly no brakes and power steering was gone]. I would check for any metal filings in the power steering oil. I had to flush the whole system because the filings were in the hydraulic brake booster also, which could cause it to fail. Just be careful in-stalling the bolt on the end of the shaft for the pulley, if it breaks, you will not be able to take the power steering pump off because the mounting bolts are behind the pulley and it will be very hard trying to get the broken bolt out of the shaft without taking the pump off because it is so close to the radiator. just my thoughts===charlei #11 · Sep 5, 2011 very good point, Charlie! This happened about 2 months ago, and ive had no issues with the pump. So i figure if its been good for this long, it should be good to go, and i didnt torque the hell out of the bolt that goes in the end of the shaft, thats the reason i just used BLUE locktite on it, to keep it from vibrating out. I'm still at a loss as to WHY the pully did this in the first place. ?? #12 · Jan 14, 2012 6 months, and still no problems or issues with the re-pressed on pully. *fingers crossed*.
