ArcticWhite A Is the front of the power steering pump pulley supposed to sit flush with the power steering pump shaft? If not, how does a person know how far to press the pulley on so it lines up properly? I really need to get a service manual! Thanks. #1 · Jan 7, 2017 Is the front of the power steering pump pulley supposed to sit flush with the power steering pump shaft? Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Jan 14, 2017 Anyone? #3 · Jan 15, 2017 How is it fastened to the shaft? Isn't the shaft threaded for a nut? If it is, the answer is "until the nut is tight". #4 · Jan 15, 2017 The shaft is threaded but my stock pump had no bolt in it. The pulley appears pressed onto the shaft without a bolt holding it in place. You can use a bolt to press the pulley on the shaft Shaft is not keyed so the press fit is the only thing that keeps it from spinning and therefore I would guess the press fit is also adequate to prevent the pulley from coming off. I am asking this question because the stock one that was on the car, the pulley was not flush with the shaft. I have a new pump and pulley and want to know if it should be flush with the shaft. I guess i should also be asking if there should be a bolt holding it on? If the stock one was correct (not flush with shaft) then there must be a spec for that. I don't have the old one any more, so can't measure, not to mention I wasn't sure if the pulley on it was actually correctly installed. #5 · Jan 16, 2017 Every power steering pulley I have replaced (I have done dozens of them) I put the the pulley flush with the shaft, granted they weren't on a LSA but I'm sure the practice is the same. #6 · Jan 16, 2017 The shaft is threaded only to pull off the old pulley and press the new one on btw. No bolt needed to hold it on. #7 · Jan 16, 2017 Fyi in case anyone else encounters this. The pulley indeed is supposed to be flush with the shaft. When I bought the car the power steering pump was squealing badly. It sounded like a bad bearing (metal on metal). I replaced the power steering pump. When replacing it I noticed the pulley was not fully pressed on. Thinking this is how it should be as it is a 30K mile car and everything should be factory original, I measured it and pressed the pulley on the new pump to the same position. Put a new belt on with the new pump as well. Squeal went away and I thought I solved the problem. A day later squeal came back. Thinking might be faulty belt, Replaced the belt again. Again the squeal went away for a day and came back. Pressed the pulley on flush with the shaft without replacing the belt and the squealing is finally solved. The things I cannot get over is how much a squealing belt sounds like a bad bearing and how sensitive the belt is to alignment. Insert Quotes Post Reply
