If you want to find something in Safari, type the search term in the address bar, then scroll down to "On This Page".

If you want to search for something on a webpage then start typing it in the URL field and you should get a screen where one of the options on it is 'on this page' :

King Penguin, this was such a helpful answer, thank you. You actually explained where to type your search criterion. Am entirely new to ipads and trying for the first time to use instead of a pc, purely for the ease of mobility while I'm travelling. Thank you.
