This problem occurs when you have both EndNote and Mendeley installed with add-ins for Word turned on.

To fix the problem on a PC:

  1. Within Word go to File, then select Options
  2. Select Add-ins
  3. In the Manage drop down menu select Word Add-ins and click Go
  4. Unselect the Mendeley Add-in if installed
  5. Press OK.

To fix the problem on a Mac:

  1. Within Word go to Tools
  2. Select Templates and Add-ins
  3. Unselect the Mendeley Add-in if installed
  4. Press OK.

If the problem continues:

  1. Open the Mendeley desktop program
  2. Go to the Tools menu
  3. Uninstall the MS Word Plugin.

  1. Hi, the mentioned steps are temporary since the error message would appear once the Word is fully closed and reopened. For a permanent fix, we need to remove the Mendeley plugin from Word's Startup location.
