5. Lena Headey As Dr. Elizabeth Weir
Played by Torri Higginson, Dr. Elizabeth Weir was the first leader of the crew of the Atlantis. Her steady leadership mixed with deep compassion for her subordinates made her a perfect commander for military actions, scientific research, diplomatic relationships, and eventually public relations with Earth and their allies across the new galaxy.
Dr. Weir may not have had the same level of comedic charm as General Hammond or Jack O'Neil, but she more than earned her spot as a leader forced into an unfamiliar galaxy with a seemingly endless number of threats big and small.
Dr. Weir did her best to keep as many of her people alive while also helping an entire galaxy of strangers overthrow their alien overlords, up until her tragic death from an incurable brain tumor.
The role of Dr. Weir would be perfect for acclaimed actress Lena Headey. Her familiarity with leadership roles could help her give Weir that sense of command, while also allowing for some truly breathtaking personal moments, as the command of humans stranded lightyears from home would no doubt cause mental anguish.
Those external problems, mixed with Weir having to confront her own personal beliefs, motivations, and her brain tumor can create one of the most compelling characters in television if given to an actress that can achieve those levels of compassion and leadership. A less than easy role on paper, but Ms. Headley could easily take that role and elevate it to something special.
