Williams is set to step away from tennis following the 2022 US Open. She has been hesitant to use the word "retirement" and instead has referred to it as an "evolution" into the next stage of her life.

Before she walks away, however, she will make one more attempt at tying Margaret Court for the most majors won in tennis history.

Williams, a 23-time major winner, has won the US Open a record six times. The 40-year-old will face an uphill battle to earn a seventh title given her age and her standing as the 410th-ranked player in the world by the WTA. She is just 1-3 in four matches during the 2022 tennis season

When is Serena Williams' next match at the US Open 2022?

Williams will play her third US Open match on Friday, Sept. 2, at approximately 7 p.m. ET against Ajla Tomljanovic. It will air on ESPN2 in the U.S.

Tomljanovic, a 29-year-old from Australia, is ranked No. 46 in the world. She defeated Evgeniya Rodina in three sets to advance to the third round and is riding a strong wave of play since Wimbledon, where she reached the quarterfinals, losing to eventual champion Elena Rybakina.

How many times has Serena Williams won the US Open?

Serena Williams has won 23 Grand Slam titles during her career, and six of those have come at the US Open. That is tied for the most, man or woman, in the history of the major with Chris Evert. 

Williams is one major title shy of tying Margaret Court for the most major wins by a tennis player. Court was dominant at the Australian Open, winning 11 of her 24 titles there, but the US Open was her second-best event. She won it five times.
