Tips for writing smut?

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Start with a simple concept: mix n match prompt ideas are great for this, and the way I started writing a bunch on Tumblr– you can make your own prompt posts, guys. Just start with a kink or sex act and a pairing, if you’re stuck. It doesn’t need a ton of bells and whistles to be hot!

And if you’re writing on Tumblr and want to use a cut, try giving us something really intriguing right before the cut. It might be the surprise in the concept (oh ho ho it’s actually Geralt’s first time!) or a beat where the character is in suspense (”She found herself suddenly desperate to know what Yen would ask her to do next.”) or the last moment before things get really explicit (”He drew in a nervous breath and let his braies drop to the floor.”). Then I gotta click ‘read more’; it’s the law.

Get to the good stuff fast: maybe your smut requires a lot of character set-up to make it make sense– in this case, try starting with an event that makes that clear, rather than explaining it, or you can even flash back (classic in media res smut technique developed by Homer for his Achilles smut) or dive into the character’s minds to fill in the gaps of how we got here. But remember: it’s okay to dive in with an established relationship! It’s okay to write them OOC! You can always tag for these things. You can also orient us in the space/world in very quick descriptions once things are going! An iPhone immediately signals this is modern au, etc. Just give us these big, headline things early– an iPhone halfway through is confusing. An iPhone at the very end is an M. Night Shyamalan twist.

Pick a POV: especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed, choose one character’s brain to pilot like a giant, slutty jaeger. If you’re feeling wild, think about what this scenario is gonna bring up for them that’s unexpected. What will specifically turn them on? How will they feel after? Will they or their partner notice something new about them?

Do one thing at a time: smut requires a balance between the internal and external. We need to know what’s physically happening with the character(s) in the space, but equally important is what they think and how they feel about it! That’s actually what makes it hot, and not a clinical description of a sex act. I think of this cause and effect like a breath cycle. There’s an action, which inspires a feeling, which inspires a thought, which inspires a decision/reaction.

If you lean into these character moments, everything gets hotter and more charged, because we’re able to process what the sex act means and not just what it is.

Listen to your instincts! If you’re bored writing a part, can you skip it? Can you describe it in a different way? If you’re uneasy about a sex act, can the character be uneasy? Can you write what the character is saying or feeling, and less what’s happening?

Pronoun problems: if you have two characters who use the same pronouns, describe what they’re doing or saying on different, alternating lines– as in, they are the subject of those sentences. (“Geralt sighed dreamily, his eyes soft and lost as Jaskier worked him over.” NEXT LINE: “Come for me,” Jaskier said quietly.” NEXT LINE: “He spilled into his hand.”) Super-old publishing trick, but our brains will understand. It’s okay to use people’s names! Names are okay! Especially for threesomes, sheesh.

Happy filth-making :’)
